To all whom it Duty concern:
Be it known that I, TIMOTHY STEBBINS, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and a'resident of Davenport, inthe county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact'de scripe tion.

In the drawings, A represents the super-v structure of a pump or the portion thereof above the surface. The lower portion of this pump-frame A consists of a continuation of the well-pipe B, such asv commonly used in single-acting pumps, and extends from the pump-head to the lower cylinder C.

The lower end of the well-pipe is provided with a suitable nut 7), which has a circumferential flange 0 projecting from its lower portion, whose lower edge is rabbeted and hasa rubber gasket cl'seated against the shoulder thus made. In order to make this joint water-tight, I have used the gasket (Z, and in order to compress said gasket in its seat and make it a thorough packing I provide the well-pipe at a point just below the base-plate witha suitable collar F, and I surround the well-pipe above this collar with an exteriorly screw threaded compressionsleeve G, which is tapped into the central opening of and carries with it the flanged cover or closure-plateH. This closure-plate is preferably of a bell shape, and near the annular edges of its mouth it is provided with a circumferential flange c, which is provided with three recesses f and preferably midway between these recesses is provided with stoplugs g g.

, The.puppet-valveK, which is shown in Fig.
3 as lifted out of the cylinder, has a vertical independent play in a suitable seat in the lower end of the cylinder. It is often desirable to remove the puppet-valve, however, and this is done in a wellknown way by means of an interiorly-screw-threaded boss 71;, suspended from and supported by the plunger I, fast on the end of the plunger-rod J. This plunger reciprocates in the lower cylinder and is greater in diameter than the well-pipe above it. Consequently when it is desired to move the puppetvalve the upper end of the plunger-rod is disconnected from the handle, and by turning it the boss 75 is screwed down over the screw-threaded stud Z; of the puppet-valve, whereupon said puppet-valve, plunger, plunger-rod, and well-pipe after the cover or closure-plate has been disengaged from the baseplate are lifted bodily together out of the Welland ofl? of the lower cylinder. When it is desired to replace the upper portion of the well-pipe and the pump-head, the well-pipe seat to such an extent that the gasket 0Z makes the joint between the nut and the cylinder perfectly Water-tight.
While it is not deemed absolutely necessary, yet it is advisable to prevent the wellpipe from turning when the gland-nut is being manipulated, which when the parts become rusted it is liable to do. ThisI accomplish by means of a bifurcated lug m, depending down from the cover, and by providing the collar F with a laterally-projecting stud or lug n, which when cover is put in place to close the central opening of the base-plate is straddled by said lug m, and thus prevents the independent rotative movement of the well-pipe, while at the same time permitting of the vertical movement of the cover and well-pipe to accomplish the objects of'the invention, as hereinbefore set forth.
l/Vhat I claim as new is- 1. In a pump, the combination with the lower cylinder, and base-plate from which said cylinder is suspended, and which has an enlarged central opening therein and retaininglugs arising therefrom, of a superimposed well-pipe alining with said cylinder which extends through said basc-plate and has an enlargement just below the same, a flanged cover adapted to interlock with said base-plate, and an exteriOrly-threaded sleeve which is tapped into the central opening of and supports said cover.
2. In a pump, the combination with the lower cylinder, a base-plate having an enlarged central opening therein and retaining-lugs arising therefrom, means for suspending said cylinder below said base-plate, a superimposed well-pipe alining with said cylinder which extends through said base-plate and has an enlargement just below the same, a flanged cover adapted to interlock with said base-plate, and an eXteriorly-threaded sleeve which is tapped into the central opening of and supports said cover.
3. In a pump, the combination with the lower cylinder, and base-plate from which said cylinder is suspended, and which has an enlarged central opening and retaining-lugs arising therefrom, means for suspending said cylinder below said base-plate, of a superimposed well-pipe alining with said cylinder which extends through said base-plate and has an enlargement just below the same, a packing-nut on the lower screw-threaded end of said pipe, a flanged cover having recesses in its outer edges which interlock with said base-plate and an eXteriorly-threaded sleeve which is tapped into the central opening of and supports said cover.
4. In a pump, the combination with the lower cylinder, and base-plate from which said cylinder is suspended and which has an enlarged central opening, means for suspending said cylinder below said base-plate, of a superimposed well-pipe alining with said cylinder extending down through said base-plate, and

5. In a pump, the combination with the lower cylinder, and base-plate from which said cylinder is suspended and which has an enlarged central opening, means for suspending said cylinder below said base-plate, of a superimposed well-pipe alining with said cylinder extending down through said base-plate, and vertically removable therethrough, and ad justable means engaging said base-plate for effecting an operative closure between the lower end of said Well-pipe and said cylinder.
6. In a pump, the combination with the lower cylinder, and base-plate from which said cylinder is suspended and which has an enlarged central opening, means for suspending said cylinder below said base-plate, of a superimposed wcll-pipe alining with said cylinder extending down through said base-plate, and vertically removable therethrough, a packing-nut on the lower screw-threaded end of the same, and means engaging said base-plate for effecting an operative closure between the lower end of said well-pipe and said cylinder.
7 In a pump, the combination with the lower cylinder, and base-plate from which said. cylinder is suspended and. which has an enlarged central opening, means for suspending said cylinder below said base-plate, of a superimposed well-pipe alining with said cylinder extending down through said base-plate, and vertically removable therethrough, a packingnut on the lower screwthreaded end of the same, and adjustable means engaging said base-plate for effecting an operative closure between the lower end of said well-pipe and said cylinder.
8. In a pump, the combination with' the lower cylinder, and base-plate from which said cylinder is suspended, and which has an enlarged central opening therein and has inverted-L-shaped retaining-lugs arising from the margins of said opening, of a superimposed wellpipe alining with said cylinder which extends through said base-plate and has an enlargement just below the same, a flanged cover having recesses in its outer edges, and an exteriorly-threaded sleeve which is tapped into the central opening of and supports said cover. In a pump, the combination with the lower cylinder, and base-plate from which said cylinder is suspended, and which has an enlarged central opening therein and has inverted-L-shaped retaining-lugs arising from the margins of said opening, of a superimposed well-pipe alining with said cylinder which extends through said base-plate and has an enlargement just below the same, a packing-nut on the lower screw-threaded end of said pipe, a flanged cover having recesses in its outer edges, and an exteriorly-threaded,
sleeve which is tapped into the central opening of and supports said cover.

In a pump, theeombination with thelower cylinder, and base-plate from which said cylinder is suspended, and which has an enlarged central opening therein and has inverted-L-shapedretaining-lugs arising from the margins of said opening, of a superimposed well-pipe alining with said cylinder which extends through said base-plate, a collar thereon having a laterally-extending lug, a-
flanged cover having recesses in its outer edges, and having a bifurcated lug depending therefrom that engages said collar-lug, and an exteriorly-threaded sleeve tapped into the central opening of and supporting said cover.
