UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.
ENOS L. WALKER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
BASKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 763,580, dated June 2 8, 1 904.
Application filed March 22, 1904.
zen of the United States, residing at St. Louis,
Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baskets, of which. the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to baskets; and it consists of the novel features herein shown, described, and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of a basket embodying the principles of my invention, the handle being omitted. Fig. 2 is a perspective showing the details of forming the end of the basket, part of the basket being broken away to economize space. Fig. 3 is a central cross-section. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal central section, partly broken away.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the body of the basket consists of woven splints. The splints are first woven into the form of a rectangular mat. Then the inner bindingstraps 5 and 6 are placed against what is to be the inner faces of the transverse splints 7, and the outer binding strips 8 and 9 are placed against the outer faces and the staples 10 are inserted to hold the binding-strips in position. Then the mat is placed upon the basket-former, and the sides of the mat are bent against the sides of the former. Then the ends of the inner binding- strips 5 and 6 are bent around the ends of the basket-former and overlapped. Then the central bottom splint 11 and the outside bottom splints 12 and 13 are bent upwardly against the ends of the basket-former outside of the inner binding- strips 5 and 6. Then the upper side splints 1 1 and 15 are bent around the ends of the basket-former outside of the bottom splints 11, 12, and 13 and overlapped. Then the lower side splints l6 and 17 are bent around the ends of the basket-former outside of the bottom splints and overlapped. Then the central bottom-reinforcing splint 18, having been woven into the mat by being shoved under the splint 11, under the central transverse splint 7 and over the two splints on each side of the center and under the two outer trans- Serial No. 199,473. (No model.)
verse splints, the ends of said reinforcingsplint are bent upwardly outside of the ends of the splints 14, 15, 16, and 17, and the staple 19 is inserted with its lower end passing through the splint 18, through the overlapping ends of the splints 16 and 17 and through the central bottom splint 11, with its upper end passing through the reinforcing-splint 18, the overlapping ends of the splints 14 and 15, and through the splint 11. Then the ends of the binding-strips 8 and 9are brought around the ends of the basket-former outside of the splints 18 and overlapped, and a staple 20 is inserted, said staple passing through the overlapping ends of the splints 8 and 9, through the overlapping ends of the splints 14: and 15, through the splint 11, and through the overlapping ends of the binding- strips 5 and 6.
The splint 11 is considerably wider than the splint 18, so that it may be bent upwardly by the basket-making machine or tools passing by the splint 18 and engaging the edges of the splint 11.
The basket-former is shaped to produce a basket which will flare in all directions, and in bending the side splints 14, 15, 16, and 17 across the ends of the basket-former they assume an inclined position, and the upper corners of the splints 14 and 15 will come under the everlapping ends of the binding-strips 8 and 9.
The basket thus formed has a smooth inner surface at its ends, the ends of the splints 11, 12, and 13 being all in the same plane. The reinforcing-splint 18 greatly strengthens the basket where it needs strength and is quickly applied, and the basket possesses many advantages in durability and strength over the former baskets in which the reinforcing-splint 18 was omitted and the ends of the splints interwoven.
The handle 21 is shown, described, and claimed in my patent, dated June 2, 1903, No. 729,981.
I claim- 1. In a basketrthe inner binding- strips 5 and 6 overlapping at the ends of the basket; the central bottom splint 11, and the outside bottom splints 12 and 13 bent upwardly against the inner binding-strips; the upper side splints 14: and 15 bent around against the outer faces of the splints 11, 12 and 13; the lower side splints 16 and 17 bent around againstthe outer faces of the splints 11, 12 and 13; the bottomreinforcing splint 18 bent upwardly against the outer faces of the splints 1 1, 15, 16 and 17; and the outer binding-strips 8 and 9 bent around outside of the splints 14:, 15 and 18 and overlapped; substantially as specified.
2. In a basket: the inner binding- strips 5 and 6 overlapping at the ends of the basket; the central bottom splint 11, and the outside bottom splints 12 and 13 bent upwardly against the inner binding-strips; the upper side splints 14 and 15 bent around against the outer faces of the splints 11, 12 and 13; the lower side ENOS L. WALKER.
