IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-GRATES.
ilgdphulr ruimt tu in time tettcrs rtnit zum making pitt nt tige smite,
TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTSV MAY COME: v
Be it known that I, GARDNER CHILsoN, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State 'of Massachusetts, have made a new and useful invention having reference to- Grates for Stoves or Furnaces; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of l which Y -Figure 1 is a top view,
Figure 2 a front elevation,
Figure 3 a longitudinal and vertical section.
Figure 4 a transverse section, and
Figure 5 a horizontal section oi the base portion of-a hot-air furnace with my invention applied thereto.
Figure 6 is a top view, and i j Figure 7 a side elevation of the grate-shaft head.
Figure 8 is a top view,
Figure 9 an under side view, and
-Figurel 10 a longitudinal section of the handle to be applied to thev grate-shaft, for either moving'it laterally or for revolving it, as circumstances may require.
In the draWings,'A denotes the ash-charnber plartof the furnace-base, and B the throat thereof. O is `the grate, which has a journal, a, 'at its Centre, Ato rest upon a forked bracket or projection, D, and between the prongs b b thereof, such bracket Dbeing projected from the inner curved'surface of the base, A. The grate is constructed of two concentric annuli., 'c d, a series of parallel bars e e e, and a series of teeth fff, the latter' being extended lradially from the entire circumference of the larger annulus', the whole being as represented in the drawings. The grateysol made, has a shaft, E, extended from it, in-` line Vwith its journal, and through 'a bearing, ',q, iria plateor shoulder, h, which is curved witha radius whose centre is at the centre of the grate. The said plate h should be supported so as to be capable of being moved horizontally in either direction. .It constitutes` a cover to' a slot, z', made in the front plate c of' the throat ofthe ash-chamber, the grate-shaft being extended through such slot. The grate-shaft is providedvyith a head, Z., formed with projections r 1', as represented in gs, G and 7. A handle, I-I, shown in figs. 8, 9, and 10, may be used with the grate-shaft, such handle being constructed not only with a socket, o, to receive the shaft-head, but with claws or hookspp, to catchl thereupon, so `as to enable the grate-shaft tobe either revolved or shaken laterally,` the claws holding thehandle l to the shaft when such handle` is either vertical or horizontal. y l` By revolving the grate-shaft ninety degrees, the grate will be turned,'so as to` discharge into the ash-chamber any coals'which inay be on the grate; so, by moving the grate-shaft back and forthlaterally, reciprocating rotary movements will be imparted to the' grate for the purpose of discharging ashes Athrough the spaces between its grate-bars. When in a horizontal position, the grate rests on'aprojection, Z', extended from the wall of the ashchamber. The prongs of the bracket D are formed as shown in top view in tig. `.l, in order to allow o i' the horizontal vibration of the grate.
The furcated bracket may extend up from the bottom oi' the ash-chamber, but in such case it would be'in the way of a shovel or other implement, when used in clearing the chamber of ashes or eind-ers. By arranging it so as to project horizontally, or thereabonts, from thewall of the ashfchambei'," and immediately under the grate, such bracket will be out of the wayoi' a shovel or other implement-when used to remove ashes from the ash-chamber.
i I am aware that a barwith a swivel-loop for the grate has been used; also tliat'arcross-bar, having a furcated l projection at its centre, to provide for oscillating and dumping the grate, has been in use. These I do not claim; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The-furcated arm D, forsupporting the grate, arranged so as to allow both'the tilting and lateral vibration thereof, substantiallyas herein specified.
Also, the grate-shaft'head and handle,v made substantially as represented, and as h ereinbefore described.
l GARDNER GHILsoN.
