PATENT OFFICE.
TWVO-THIRDS TO WASHINGTON S. HATCH AND WEST sALAMANoAi NEW YORK.
SARAH E. HATCH, OF
PIPE-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,317, dated June 14, 1904. Application filed November 13, 1903. Serial No. 181,036. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY O. KnLsEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Salamanca, in the county of Cattaraugus and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Couplings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in pipe-couplings wherein the meeting ends of two sections of water or other pipe are made tight; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts of which it is composed, all as will be hereinafter more fully explained, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
This device is an improvement on Letters Patent granted to me for a similar invention, which patent is dated October 3, 1899, and numbered 634, 087, and by its construction the same is very much simplified and quickly and readily applied to the meeting ends of sections of pipe.
The annexed drawings, to which reference is made, fully illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical sectional view of my improved pipe-joint couplinggand Fig. 2 is a front or face view of the same.
Referring by letters to the accompanying drawings, A designates a clamp comprising two sections a a, both of which are constructed alike and each of which are provided at their upper and lower portions with horizontal openings 1) I) to receive securing-bolts 0? cl, which are slotted on one end to receive a pin 0; but instead of a pin the bolts may be screwthreaded and securing-nuts used. These twin halves forming a clamp are internally beveled, as at h, from the center thereof outwardly, as clearly shown in Fig. 1, thus providing a wedge-shaped circular interior 1' on either side of the center of the clamp and between the same and a clamping-sleeve e, which latter is placed upon the meeting ends of the pipe-sections f f, covering the jointthereof. Interposed between the inclined circular face of the interior of the twin clamps aforesaid are wedges that may be driven through these inclined spaces from either face of said clamp.
It will be seen from the above description, when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, that I provide a means for insuring against leakage at the joints of large conduitpipes, water-pipes, &c., wherein at the joints under pressure the contents are forced through the joint when under pressure. The ring or coupling-sleevebeing placed upon the meeting ends of the pipe-sections and the twin sections of the clasp or clamp placed in position bring the sleeve within the same and the sections locked together by the bolts 0 c, the wedges g are driven into the wedge-shaped space between said sleeve and clamp, thus firmly securing the parts to one another. It will be further observed that the device may be attached to pipes for closing crevices or cracks, either old or new, and it is applied in a similar manner to that above described, and the pipe may not be removed from its position, as the twin sections are readily applied from either side thereof, and a device as herein described and shown is durable, easily and quickly applied to the meeting pipe-sections, and at the same time inexpensive to manufacture.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of thepipe-clamping sleeve and wedges having sides parallel with the outer surfaces of said sleeve and bearing directly against it, and having sides inclined to said sleeve and the clamp comprising twin sections provided with interior oppositely-beveled faces with which said inclined faces of the wedges engage, and means for locking the sections together.
. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two witnesses.
' HENRY o. KELSEY.
