SAFETY-VALVE FOR STEAM-BOILERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 762,085, dated June *7, 1904. Application filed March 5,1904. Serial No. 196,662. (No model.)
To all whmn it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARSENIUS R. PLoPrERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shenandoah, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Steam-Boilers, particularly for boilers and hotwater tanks used in connection with kitchen ranges and stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safety devices for steam-boilers, and particularly to that class adapted to be connected to boilers and hotwater tanks used in connection with kitchen ranges and stoves.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and improved device of this character which shall be thoroughly automatic in its operation. Furthermore, the object of the invention is to provide a device having a piston-rod with a piston-head secured upon both ends of the rod and so arranged that the piston-rod will open and close the safety-valve.
Furthermore, the object of the invention is to provide a safety device of the character described of simple and inexpensive construction and which is adapted to be readily connected to boilers of various construction.
My invention, stated in general terms, consists of a piston-rod provided with a pistonhead at each end, cylinders provided" in the extension ends of the cold and hot water pipes, and rod connection with the crank-arm of the safety-valve.
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in both views, and in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a view in elevation of my invention connected to a boiler and having parts broken away to show the inner construction of the same.
In the drawings, 1 denotes an ordinary hotwater boiler or hot-water tank, and 2 the coldwater supply-pipe to the boiler. The hotwater or outlet pipe 3 is provided with a T- shaped connection, so that the house-supply pipes may be attached thereto.
I provide my invention with a cold-water pipe 4, having near its outer end a port which is closed by a check-valve 5, said check-valve preventing the hot water or steam from entering the cold-water pipe when the pressure of the steam becomes greater than that of the cold water. The cold-water pipe is provided with a short extension 6, which extends a predetermined distance beyond the port and safety-valve. In this extension I provide a piston-head 7, suitable bushing and packing 8, a threaded cap 9 being secured over the extension to form a water-tight cylinder, the central portion of the cap being provided with an aperture. Commencing at the check-valve the cold-water pipe extends in an approximately semicircular shape, the opposite end of which is straight and provided with screwthread' which permits the pipe to be coupled to the cold-water pipe of the boiler.
The hot-water or steam ou tletpipe is formed for a predetermined distance at one end integrally with the straight end of the cold-water or inlet pipe. The steam-pipe is bent at a right angle, and the vertical portion 10I provide at its outer end with msafety-valve 11, said safety-valve being provided with a crankarm 12. At the base of the vertical extension 10 of the steam-pipe I provide an extension 13, which serves as the cylinder for the pistonhead 14. This extension is also provided with a suitable bushing, a packing, and cap.
The piston-heads 7 and 14 are connected by a piston-rod 15. On top of the circular portion of the coldwaterinlet pipe I provide a pivot-pin 16. This pin is located about midway the two ends of the pipe. A connectingrod 17 is pivoted on the pivot-pin, and this rod has ears formed at each end, one end straddling the piston-rod and having suitable connection therewith, and the opposite end, which is also provided with ears, is connected to a rod 18, the last-named rod being connected with the crank-arm of the safety-valve.
From the above description it will be seen that I employ both the pressure of the cold water and steam to operate the device. hen the steam-pressure is greater than the mean pressure of the cold water, the piston-head 14 is forced against the end of its cylinder, and the safety-valve, through the medium of the piston-rod 15, connecting-rods 17 and 18, is opened and the steam allowed to escape. After sufficient amount of steam has escaped to lower the steam-pressure below that of the cold-water pressure the cold water pressing against the piston-head 7 pushes the pistonhead 7 back against the packing and bushing, and the safety-valve is closed through the same medium which operated to open it.
The construction,operation, and advantages, it is thought, will be understood from the foregoing description, it being noted that various changes may be made in the proportion and details of construction without departing from the scope of the invention.
Having fully described my invention. what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a safety device of the character described an inlet and an outlet pipe, a checkvalve seated in the inlet-pipe, a safety-valve provided at the end of the outlet-pipe, cylinder extensions to the pipes, a piston rod and heads and means for operating the safety-valve substantially as shown.
2. In a safety device for boilers, an inlet and an outlet pipe having cylinders therein,
a piston-rod having a piston-head at each end, rods connecting the piston-rod and safetyvalve substantially as described.
3. In a safety device of the character described, an inlet and an outlet pipe, having cylinders formed in their end extensions, pistonheads adapted to fit the cylinders and a piston-rod eonnecting the piston-heads and rods connecting the piston-rod with the crank-arm of the safety-valve as and for the purpose described.
4. In a safety device for steam-boilers, an outlet and an inlet pipe, cylinders formed in the extension ends of the inlet and outlet pipes, said cylinders provided with suitable bushing and packing, piston-heads adapted to reciprocate in the cylinders, a piston-rod connecting the piston-heads, a pivot-pin secured to the cold-water pipe, a rod pivoted on the pin and having end connections with the piston-rod and with a second rod, said last-named rod having its opposite end connected to the crankarm of the safety-valve substantially as and for the purpose described.
