The invention is fully disclosed in the folrate parts of my invention are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure l is a central longitudinal section of a manhole made according to my invention; Fig. 2, ahorizontal section thereof on the line 2 2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3', a plan View with a part of the cover removed; and Fig. 4, a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing a modification.

The manhole which forms the subject of this application is oblong in form in horizontal section and wider at one end than at the other, the side walls-thereof converging from the wider to the narrower end and being also slightly curved, while the end walls arealso slightly curved and are substantially at right angles to the longitudinal diameter of the manhole. The said manhole comprises a bottom a, composed of concrete or other suitable material, a body portion L, and aY cover c. The body portion I) is composed of separate horizontal layers of bricks or blocks cornposed of concrete material, and each of the layers of bricks or blocks is made up. of four .different styles or shapes of bricks or blocks,

two of the bricks or blocks b3 are employed. "and constitute the corners of the larger end of said layer, and two of the bricks or blocks b4 are employed one in each side of said layer,

. and three ofthe bricks or blocks b5, two of which are; in the opposite sides of the layer and one in the wider end thereof, and in practice vthe positions of the corner and end bricks or blocks are reversed in the separate layers in order to break joints. e

which pass thereinto through'the ends thereof, and with conduits cl2, which vpass thereinto at the opposite sides of the wider end thereof, and the conduits d2 enter the manhole through openings Ain the blocks b5, and one of the end conduits enters through the other block b5 in the wider end of the manhole,while the other enters throughone of the blocks b2 in the narrower end of the manhole.

It will be apparent that the size of the manhole in the longitudinal section and in trans- I verse width may be regulated or may be made larger or smaller, as may be desired, by simply enlarging the bricks or blocks b2 b3 b* and the brick or block b5 in the wider end of the separate layers which make up the body portion of the manhole.

The form of construction shown in Fig. 3 is exactly the same as that shown in Fig. 2 eX- cept that a different layer of the horizontal bricks or blocks thatimake up the body portion of the manhole is shown, and in this form of construction I have also shown a part of my improved manhole-cover, which comprises a horizontal T-iron c and transverse I-beams e2, three of which are employed, and said T-iron and I-beams form a frame which sup-l ports a cover composed of concrete bricks or blocks, four different styles or shapes of which are employed and three of which are shown and designated by the reference characters e3, e4, and e5, and the concrete bricks or' blocks which make up one side of the cover are exactly the same as those that make upv the op- IOO posite side, the opposite side being formed by simply turning over or reversing the position oi' the bricks or blocks in the iirst-namcd side. The cover is also provided with a central opening e, and for this purpose the T-beam e is composed of two parts, and around said opening is placed the usual collar c7, on which may be placed the usual removable cap, which is not shown.

In Fig. L I have shown a slight modilication in which each of the horizontal layers which make up the body portion or' the manhole is composed of four diierent styles of bricks or blocks the same as shown in Fig. 2; but in this case the said bricks or blocks are slightly different in shape and dimensions, but the principle of construction is the same as in the said Fig. A, and the different styles or shapes of bricks or blocks are designated by the reference characters f, f2, f3, and ft, the bricks or blocks f forming the narrower end of the manhole, the bricks or blocks f2 forming the corners of the wider end thereof,while the bricks or blocks f3 form parts ot' the side walls, the bricks or blocks]M being also used in the side walls and in the wider end of the manhole, and by varying the size of these bricks or blocks the manhole may be made of any desired dimensions in horizontal section without changing the form thereof. rlhe object in forming the manhole wider at one end than at the other is to facilitate the passage of the cables, which enter said manhole through the conduit at the narrower end of the manhole, through the. side conduits, and it will also be apparent that this form of construction also facilitates the passage of the cables straight through the manhole, or from end to end thereoi', especially when a portion ofthe said cables is to be passed through the side conduits.

Although I have described the bricks or blocks which make up the body portion and cover of the manhole as composed of concrete material, it will be apparent that the said bricks or blocks may be composed of any material capable of being molded into the required form and possessing the necessary strength.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is#- l.` A manhole the body portion ol" which is composed or' separate horizontal layers of bricks or blocks, said bricks or blocks being of four different styles or shapes and heilig adapted to be reversed in the separate layers soas to break the joints, substantially as shown and described.

2. A manhole, the body portion ol which is composed of separate horizontal layers ol bricks or blocks, said bricks or blocks being of four different styles or shapes and being adapted to be reversed in the alternate layers so as to break the lioints, said manhole being also wider in horizontal section at one end than at the other, substantially as shown and described.

3. A manhole the body portion ol5 which is composed or' separate horizontal layers ol bricks or blocks. said bricks or blocks being of four different styles or shapes, and said manhole being also provided with a cover composed ot' supporting beams or bars arranged at right angles to each other and bricks or blocks of four different styles or shapes, substantially as shown and described.

4:. A cover for manholes composed oi snpporting beams or bars arranged at right angles to each other and bricks or blocks ol four different styles or shapes, substantially as shown and described.

5. A manhole which is oblong in form and wider at one end than at the other, said manhole being provided with a cover of similar form and composed ot' beams or bars arranged at right angles to each other and bricks or blocks supported by said beams or bars, substantially as shown and described.
