IMrnovBMEN-T IN STEAM-ENGINE VALVE-GEAR.
Be lit known that we, Dn VOLsoN Woon, and SrILILMAN W. ROBINsoN, both ofthe city of-Ann'Arbor, county' of Weshtenaw, and State o`f`Michig-an, have invented a new and improved Mode of Operating Valves under cer-1 tain circumstances and we do hereby declare that the following is a. full and exact description thereof, refer-. ence being had to the nccoinpanyingdrawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of our invention consists of va device for reversing the valve of an engine Vafter the end Of the stroke.r It is useful in unbalanced engines, by'which thework is done at or near the end ofthe strokefnd in which itisfdesirable to maintain the' pressure behindthe piston nntilthe blow is struck. To enableotbersgklleglniie, ett to understandcur inventicndve wilLproceexl-rto describe Y In thegures, Aris the pistcn-rod in an ordinary steam cylinder, which has a projection, B, to serve as teppet. The piece C has projections on one side, between which the tappet Binay move freely ashort distance. During the advance stroke, theltulppet B, coming in contact with the projection a lon the piece C, forces the latter forward during the remainder of the stroke, `after which tbe piecejG moves on by virtueel' the force which has been imparted to it by .theforward movement of the tappet, and brings the projection b against tho valve-rod D, andieveses the valve Instead of the piece'C operating directly upon the valve-rod, it mayoperate -up'on -a lever'or other device,y which is interposed between D and C,.so arranged as to' reverse the valve. Theparts may be so -arranged that the valveshallbc partly reversed at the end of thestroke of the piston. Instead of the projections of the piece between which tbe tappet moves, there may be two tappets on the piston-rod,
.between which the piece C may move.
The main feature of the invention consists in Operating the Avalve-gear by apiece, O, which is free to move' on after tbeend of the stroke of the piston, 'and to which e.v reciprocating movement is imparted by one or incre tappets on the piston-rod. The same 'arrangement may be used for tripping a. latch, so as to permit an extraneous Iforce toureverse the valve. l
