SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 761,176, dated May 31, 1904.
Application filed July 11, 1903- Serial No. 165,142. (No model.)
"exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a portion of a sand core used in casting carwheels, showing the several parts in operative position. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the improved core. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4: is an elevational view of the core.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cores for use in molding carwheels comprising in one integral member a disk-shaped base 1 and hollow standard 2, connected therewith by means of integral supporting-legs 3, with radially-extending channels or passages 4 between the disk 1 and standard 2, said channels or passages connecting with the relatively conical opening projected vertically through the standard above the disk or base portion thereof. It will be observed that the base 1 is an imperforate member and that the passages 4 when in position within the sand mold are in a line with the plane of the portion of the hub-matrix.
One of the objects of this core for use in casting car-wheels is to provide in the complete molding-flask a relatively high column within the sprue portion of the mold, so that as the casting within the mold shrinks in cooling a quantity of metal will be always available within the sprue to compensate for the loss resulting from such shrinkage. Hence it is desirable that the openings 4:, connecting the sprue with the interior of the mold, shall be in alinement with the casting within said mold. By this improved method of casting car wheels the metal is introduced into the mold-cavity in such relation theretov that shrinkage of metal therein will cause a sprue from the interior of the core herein shown and result in a more perfect wheel than has heretofore been produced, and when the sprue is knocked off the points of fracture causes no objection, as the said points are relatively small and the upper plane of the base 1 is in line with the exterior face of the finished casting.
It will be observed that the mold with which the core is employed is provided with a matrix having a depression capable of receiving the base of the core, and by forming the core with a hollow standard, which is connected to the base by the spaced legs, radial channels are provided in the plane alining with the plane of a portion of the matrix, whereby the metal will be fed directly from the core to the matrix.
Having thus described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a mold having a matrix provided with a depression, of a core provided with a base adapted to enter said depression, said core also having a hollow standard with supporting-legs spaced apart and so located as to provide radial channels in alinement with the plane of a portion of the matrix, when said base is placed in said depression; substantially as described.
2. The combination with a mold having a matrix provided with a depression, of a core provided with a base adapted to enter said depression, said core also having a hollow standard connected to the top of the base and provided with a central opening extending from the base to the opposite end of the core, said hollow standard being provided with radial channels in alinement with the plane of a'portion of the matrix when said base is placed in said depression; substantially as described.
3. A core for use in molding car-wheels, comprising a disk-shaped base, a central hollow standard of less diameter than the base and having a conical opening extending from the base to the opposite end of the core, and integral legs connecting the standard and the base and so spaced apart as to provide radial openings above the top of the base, the bottoms of the openings being in line With the top surface of the base; substantially as described.
4. The combination with a mold having a matrix provided With a depression, of a core provided With a base adapted to enter said depression, and having a standard provided with a conical opening extending from the baseto IO the opposite end of the core, and supportinglegs connecting the core to the base and spaced
