IMPROVE-Merini GATES.
@itt dgthtlt tramuta im tlg'ettftttttt ttent tra making 'pnt nf tip same.
TO ALL WHOM I'l MAY CONCERN: Y
Be it known that I, JOBN L. JAnnwAY, of Flemington, ,Hunterdon county, in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new ,and useful Improvements in Gates ;l Yand I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being hadV to the accompanying drawings, making part of this application. -V
- My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in thatv kind of gates which are constructed and arranged to slide part way back and then rotate or swing; and my invention consists in the employment, .in combination with a sliding Aand .swinging gate, of swivelling easter-wheel stands, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.. Y A v And my invention consists, further, in the employment of a projecting lip upon the swivel or sustaining-post for the purposeof retaining theways within the casters, as .will be presently explained. v y I To enable those skilled in the manufacture vof gates to more fully understandmy inv ention,.I will proceed ,t to describe the same, referring to the accompanying drawings, and in which- I Figure 1 is a plan view of a gute constructed upon my improved plan, showing the gate partially drawnback.
-Figure 2 is a top view of the same, showing the drawn back and swung round'at right angles tothe position shown in g. 1, and l v Figure 3 is a'detail view, showing more fully the arrangement oi' one of the caster-wheels audits stand.
Similar letters of reference denote like parts in the different igures. l
A is the sustaining and B the loclnpost; C C are the rails and D the braces of the gate; E E -are the ends of thegate, atthe lower extremities of which are secured rollers gg; ff are ways which are secured to the rails C C, and have their bearings within the caster-wheels.
The construction and operation of my improved gate are as follows: The posts are secured in proper position and' distance apart. Upon the sustaining-post A are arranged two caster-wheel stands, d rZ,-so constructed as to receive the-shank of the wheel-frame e, (see iig.V 3,) and the distance apart being equalto that between the lower -edges of the two rails C C. Upon this post is also arranged a lip, z', just abovel -the upper caster-wheel, and distant from it just suicient to allow the rail Cfto slide or ride Iupon the caster-wheel freely., and at the same time to prevent the ways from jumping out of their bearings in the caster-wheels, whose faces are adapted to suit the shape of the ways. This lip z' is so secured to the post that itumay be turped out of place to admit, of the gate being removed. 'The ways are secured tothe lower edge of the rails C C, and are adapted insbape to fit the periphery of the caster-wheels, or the reverse- Y When itis necessaryjto open the gate its full distance, 1t is pushed back, sliding on the caster-wheels e e and rolls y g, until it -arrives at a point whereit is evenly balanced, when it is swung around at right angles, the caster-wheels turning freely in their sockets in the stands l d, and tlius the space between theiposts A and B is left perfectly free. 1
When it is desired to shut the gate, -1t only necessary .to swing the gate in a reverse direction, and pushlit-towards the lock-post B to its place. l
i l Having described the construction and operation of my improved gate, what I claim asnew, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is d Y The employment, in combination with the sustn l'r'iin,:1;post A and gate, of the swiv'eiling caster-wheel stands c d e d, the whole arranged and operating as described, for the purposesot forth. A
I also claim, in combination with the above, the ietaininglip'z', as and for the purposeset forth.
In' testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and; ailxed my seal, this 25th day of'February, 1868 JNO. L. JANEWAY. [L 5.]
Witnesses: i J. N. MCINTIRE, Y Guns. A. Soorr.
