i To all whom it may concern:
Be it known' that I, JOEL WALKER NEWTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elberton, in the county of Elbert and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful"A Improvements in Churns; andI do hereby declare the following to lbe a full, clear, and exact description o f the invention, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to churns; and it consists of certain novel features of construction and combination of parts, as will .be hereinafter clearly set forth.
The prime object of my invention, among others, is to provide an operatingfmechanism for the churn-dasher and aclosure for the churn-body which shall be reliably eiiicient in the performance of their respective oflces.
Other objects and advantages will be -hereinafter .made clearly apparent, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,- which are made apart of 'this application, and inwhich- Figure l shows Aa perspective viewv of my invention complete ready for use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinalfcentral section of my churn. Fig. Sis a horizontal section of Fig. 2 on line 3 3. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail view of the closure for my churn-body. Referring to the numerals on the drawings,
1 designates a churn-housing, which maybe made any `desired size, said housing being tend over the flange and reliably lock the churn-body to the lioor. The churn-body is Areleased -by a rotary movement.

provi-ded at its upper end with two diametric- I ally-extending lugs or lingers 8, each of which is designed to fit in the bayonet-slot 9vfprovided in the flange ofthe auxiliary lid-section 10, whereby when said auxiliary-lid-section Vis dropped down over the upper end of the `body-section the lug 8 will enter the bayonetslots, when a partial rotation of said lid will v .prevent it from casually rising upward and hold it in a locked position until it isagain fit bodily yover the auxiliary lid-section 10 is Designed to v the main lid or closure proper, 11, also having v a bayonet-slot 12, similar to the slotf9, said bayonet-slot' being formed in adepending flange of suiiicient size to reach downward to cover the iange upon the auxiliary lid 10. It therefore follows thatby a partial rotation of the main closure 11 in an opposite direction from that imparted to the auxiliary closure 10 the bayonet-slot 12 will engage the protruding end ofthe lug 8 and securely hold both closures in alocked position. Each of the closures 10 and 11 is provided with a central aperture 13, adapted to receive the reciprocating dasher 14,"the upper enol of which is connected to the cross-head 15, 'the ends of which are provided with the guiding inem- `bers 16, which lit into the ways 17, thereby permitting the members 16 to reciprocate within said grooves incident to the reciprocation of the dasher 14. y
The cross-head 15 is provided withthe extension 18., which is pivotallyconnected by means of the link-section 19 to the crank 20,
said crank or wrist-pin 2O being carried by' the wheel-21, mounted upon the shaft 22, the outer end of said shaft having keyed thereon `the balance-wheel 23, designed topreserve the requisite momentum.

the housing 1, as will be clearly seen by reference to Fig. 2, andV keyed to said shaft beby turning the shaft 4 by means of the crank IOO 27 said train of gear-wheels will be actuated, causing the wheel 21 to be rapidly rotated and incidentally producing a reeiprocatory movement upon the dasher 14 and causing the dasher-blades 28 to be moved upward and downward within the milk to be churned. rlhe actuation` of the dasher proper, 28, is therefore effected at the expense of a minimum amount of labor, and as the closure-sections 10 and 11 are securely locked against casual removal the milk will be confined within the receptacle or body portion 5 until butter is produced.
In addition to the anchoring-clamps 7 for holding the body of the churn in position I also provide suitably-apertured ears or staples 29, which are designed to be engaged by the hooks 30, secured to a contiguous part of the casing, and it is therefore obvious that the churn-body, and more especially the closureseetions 10 and 11, will be held reliably in a locked position.
In order to aid in lifting Vthe dasher-shaft and dasher attached to the lower end thereof, I provide the lifting-spring 31, the lower end of which is connected with the cross-head 15,
while the upper end thereof is attached to the upper end of the housing, the tension of the spring being directed to pull upward upon said cross-head, thus enabling the weight of the cross-head and parts carried thereby to be easily raised.
The parts of my churn may be cheaply manufactured and readily assembled each in its respective operative position, and having described the preferred combination and construction of parts I wish to comprehend Such substantial equivalents and substitutes as may be considered as falling fairly within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described churn and churn-closure comprising a suitable housing; a churnbody 5 located within said housing; a liange formed upon the lower end of the churn; anchoring members 7 engaging said iange and secured to the ioor; a dasher and dasher-shaft and means to reciprocate the same within the churn-body and a closure therefor, comprising the auxiliary and main closures 1() and 11 respectively, each having depending flanges and slotted recesses formed in the iianges adapted to engage a lug or linger upon cach side of the upper end of the churn-body and additional means to hold the said closures against casual rotation, all substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.
