SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.1 l769,266, dated September 6, 1904.

To all whom it may concern.
' Utica, Licking county, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rail-Supports; and my preferred manner of carrying out the invention is set forth in the following full, clear, and exact description, terminating with claims particularly specifying the novelty.
This invention relates to railways, and more particularly to that class of devices thereunder known as rail-supports.
The object is to provide effective means for clamping the rail; and to this end the inven tion may be said to consist in certain novel structures and arrangement of parts, which will be fully described in the following specication and illustrated in the drawings, in which-' Figure 1 is a perspective view of the inven` tion as applied to a tie. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line X X, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the basel members with the sliding clamp in the middle and the rest of the clamping mechanism removed. Fig. 4: is a plan View of the slide. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal section through Fig. 4 on line y y. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the outer clamp. Fig. 7 is a front elevation of Fig. 6. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the inner clamp.
The letter B designates the base member, in this case forming the end section of a tie T, which comprises, in addition to the end sections, a central section O, whose length may be varied to suit different conditions. The inner ends of the base members may be provided with depending 'iianges F to prevent lateral creeping of the tie.
R indicates the rails, only one of which -is shown. The base member is divided internally by a horizontal shelf 1 into two'cornpartments, the upper of which, A, is shorter than y the lower, leaving an exposed platform 2, which is continuous with the shelf. The top 3 of the upper compartment is provided on its inner edge with a rectangular notch 5 and centrally with a rectangular aperture A. pose of the shelf is to facilitate removing from the open inner end of compartment A the slide which is described below.
The numeral? designates a sliding clamp comprising recurved ends 8, embracing lateral' iianges 9 on the base member, and a straight bar 10, having on one edge a rectangular notch 11 and on the other a continuous undercut bevel 12. Notch 11 is in alinement with notch 5 and is provided at its inner edge with inclined portion 18.
Occupying the upper compartment is a slide 14, having a rectangular body portion 15 and a threaded extension 16. yThe body portion is provided with a'central aperture 17, having on its side walls inwardly-projecting iianges 18. These flanges extend from the rear wall of the aperture for about half the length of the opening land are beveled upwardly and forwardly on their lower edges, forming camways. Thus two regions .are formed inthe aperture, the rearward of which is restricted by the inwardly-projecting flanges.
Apertures e and 6 in the base member are of such size as to receive and firmly brace the stem 23 of outer clamp 19. As shown in Figs. 6 and 7 this clamp has the form of a short blunt spike. It is provided with the laterallyprojecting head 2O for engagement'with the rail-base and has the reduced portion 21 intermediate its length. The lower shoulders 22, formed at the junction of the reduced portionWith thestem, are inclined downwardly and rearwardly, forming'complementary camways to those on the slide. The stem on the outer clamp is of such diameter as to pass readily through the forward portion of the central aperture of the slide. It is evident that a forward motion of the slide will cause the camways on the iianges to engage with the -camways of the clamp, forcing the latter downward.
The inner end of the upper compartment A is occupied by the rectangular body ofinner clamp 23. Referring particularly to Fig. 8, it will be seen that this clamp has a reduced head 211, which is adapted to iit w-ithin notch 5 in the top of the base member and is provided with an undercut bevel 25 to engage with the inclined portion of notch 11 on the IOO sliding clamp. It is further provided with a longitudinal opening 26 for the reception of extension 16 of the slide. Anut 27 fits upon the threaded end of the extension outside of the clamp.
In assembling the parts of the rail-support the sliding clamp is first slipped upon the top of the base member. Then the slide is introduced into the upper compartment, so that the forward portion of its aperture is in alinement with apertures 4L and 6. At this stage or earlier the rail may be placed in position. The outer clamp is dropped into place, with. its head resting upon the base of' the rail. The inner clamp is pushed into the compartment along the projecting extension of the slide, and finally the nut is tightened. This causes the slide to move inward, and, as explained, the outer clamp is drawn forcibly down upon the rail-base. Simultaneously the inner clamp is being pushed toward the rail and its head rides upon the beveled notch of the sliding clamp, jamming the latter inwardly and downwardly against its side of' the rail-base.
While for convenience I have shown my device as applied to a tie, I wish it to be understood that the invention lies in the clamping mechanism, which I intend to claim broadly, and it is to be noted that the sliding clamp may be omitted and the inner clamp forced into direct engagement with the rail without departing from the spirit of my invention.
What is claimed as new isl. In a device of the character described, the combination with the rail and a base member having alined vertical apertures; of a slide fitting within said fmember and comprising a body portion and a lateral extension, said body portion being provided with an aperture adapted to aline with the last-named apertures, an outer clamp comprising a head engaging with the rail-base and a stem passing through all said apertures, an inner clamp loosely mounted on the latter extension of the slide and having a head for clamping the railbase, and means for causing said slide and inner clamp to move toward each other.
2. Ina device of the character described, the combination with the -rail and a base member having alined vertical apertures; of' a slide fitting within said member and `comprising a body portion and a lateral threaded eXtension, said body portion being provided with an aperture adapted to aline with the lastnamed apertures, an outer clamp comprising a head engaging with the rail-base and a stem passing through all said apertures, an inner clamp mounted loosely on the threaded extension of the slide and having a head for clamping the rail-base, and a nut surrounding theA threaded extension outside said clamp.
3. In a device of' the character described, the
combination with the rail and a base member having alined vertical apertures; of a slide fitting within said member and comprising a body portion and a lateral extension, said body portion having an aperture adapted to aline with the last-named apertures, and being further provided with inwardly -pr 1ijeeting flanges forming a restricted region in said aperture, a clamp comprising a head adapted to clamp the rail-base and a stem passing through all said apertures and having an intermediate reduced portion adapted to receive said flanges, and means for producing a longitudinal movement of the slide.
4. Inadevice of the character described, the combination with the rail and a base member having alined vertical apertures; of a slide litting within said base member and having an aperture adapted to aline with the fast-named apertures and being further provided on its inner side walls with camways, a clanip comprising a head engaging with the rail-base and a stem passing through all said apertures and having camways engaging with the camways of the slide, and means for moving said slide longitudinally, whereby the clamp is forced downward against the rail.
5. In a device of the character described. the combination with the rail and a base member having alined vertical apertures; of a slide 1it ting within said base member and having an aperture adapted to aline with the last-named apertures, the side walls of' said aperture being provided with iianges extending' from the rear of the aperture to a point intermediate the length of the walls and having forwardly and upwardly inclined camways on their lower edges, a clamp comprising a head engaging with the rail-base and a stem passing through all said apertures and having a reduced portion forming rearwardly and downwardly inclined camways adapted to engage with the camways on the slide, and means for producing a longitudinal movement of' the slide.
6. In adevice ofthe character described, the combination with the rail and a base member having alined vertical apertures; of a slide litting within said base member and coml'irising a rectangular body portion and a lateral threaded extension, said body portion having a rectangular aperture adapted to' aline with the last-named apertures, the side walls o1 said aperture being provided with inwardlyprojecting ianges extending from the rear of the aperture to a point intermediair. the length of the walls and having forwardly and upwardly inclined camways on their lower edges, a clamp comprising a head engaging with the rail-base and a stem passing through all said apertures and having a reduced portion Vlorming rearwardly and downwardly inclined camways adapted to engage with the camways on the slide, and a nut surrounding the end ofthe threaded extension, whereby a longitudinal movement of the slide is produced and said camways are brought into engagement.
7. In a device of the character described, the combination with the rail and a base member lOO having alined vertical apertures; of a slide {itting within said basemember and comprising a body portion and a threadedy extension, said body portion having an aperture adapted to aline with the 'last-'named apertures and being further provided on its innerside walls with camways, an outer clamp comprising a head engaging with the rail-base and a stem passing through all said apertures and having camways engaging with the camways of the slide, an inner clamp loosely mounted on the' threaded extension of the slide and having a head for clamping the rail-base, and a nut surrounding the threaded extension outside the clamp.
8. In adevice of the character described, the
combination with the rail and a base member -a head engaging with the rail-base and a rectangular stem passing through all said apertures, and having a reduced portion forming rearwardly and downwardly inclined camways engaging with the camways on the slide, an
inner clamp comprising ahead adapted to clamp the rail-base and a rectangular body portion tting within said compartment and having a transverse opening forvthe reception of said threaded extension, and a nut surrounding said extension outside the inner clamp.
` 9. Inadevice of the character described, the combination with the rail and baseA member having a transverse compartment having an open inner end, said base member being further provided with a top having flanges projecting from its sides and a rectangular notch at its inner end; ofa sliding clamp on the top of said base member comprising recurved ends embracing said iianges and a straight portion having on one side a continuous undercut bevel adapted to receive the rail-base and on the other a rectangular beveled notch alined with the notch in said top, a second clamp comprising a rectangular body portion sliding. within said compartment and a rectangular head standing within the notch in the top and having an undercut bevel engaging with the beveled notch of the sliding clamp, and means for causing said clamp to move toward the rail.
10. In a device of the character described, a
hollow base member having a horizontal shelf forming an upper transverse compartment 'provided with an opeiivinner end, an external platform forming a continuation of said shelf at this end, a top having flanges projecting fromits sides and a notch communicating with the open end of the compartment, and alined apertures in the top-and shelf; combined with a slide fitting within said compartment and having an aperture adapted to aline with the last-named apertures and being further provided with camways Von its inner walls, an outer clamp comprising a head adapted to engage the base of a rail and a stem passing through all said apertures and having camways adapted to engage with the camways of the slide, an inner clamp comprising a body portion fitting within the open end of said compartment and a head standing within the notch in the top and having an undercut bevel adapted to clamp the base of a rail, and-means for causing said slide and inner clamp to approach each other.
11. In a device of the character described, a hollowbase member having ahorizontal shelf forming an upper transverse 'compartment provided with an open inner end, an external platform forming a continuation of said shelf 'at'this end, a top having iianges' projecting IOO the slide, a sliding clamp on the top of the base member comprising recurved ends embracing said flanges anda straight portion having on one side' a continuous undercut bevel adapted to receive the lbase of a rail and on the other a beveled notch alined with the notch in said top, an inner clamp comprising a body portion fitting within the open end of said compartment and a head standing within the notch in the top and having an undercut bevel engaging with the beveled notch of the sliding clamp,vand means for causing said slide and inner clamp to approach each other.
