- Be it known that I, WILLIAM E. CoLEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and usefollowing is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in fasteners, and -more particularly to an improvement in that form of fasteners used to fasten or secure articlesto wearing apparel or to fasten articles of wearing-apparel together. In fasteners or clasps of this nature as heretofore constructed two operations are requiredan operation of the mechanism to secure the fastener and an oper-' ation 'of the mechanism to release the fastener from the outside of the wearing-apparel to which it was attached.
The object of my invention is to improve the construction of a fastener, whereby the fastener is secured to an apparel automatically and released by pressure on a lever in the fastener.
My invention consists inthe peculiar and novel construction of a fastener having a U- shaped frame stamped from sheet metal having a spring tension, a spring-tongue, bearings, and an eye formed integral with the frame, a fastening-leverhavingpivots working in the bearings and held in its closed position by the spring-tongue, and a cap adapted to cover the front of the fastenerand hold the fastening-lever in its operative position in the frame, hereinafter. When the parts of the fastener are assembled, the fastening-lever 5 extends through the openinga on the front a of the frame between the bearings a (o The pivots 6 6 of the fasteningdeverb are held in the bearings a (t in the frameby the face of the cap 0. The spring-tongue'a exerts a spring tension on the fastening-leverb to hold the end 6 against the back t' of the fastener. The
thumb-piece Z on the fastening-lever extends the lever forward against the tension of the spring-tongue C63. The end 6 of the lever is now forced into the fabric by the tension of the spring-tongue, securely holding the fastener to the fabric. shown in-broken lines in Fig. 5.
The fastener when once secured 1s practl- The fastener may be incally locked to the fabric and cannot be released except by pressure on the thumb-piece 0f the fastening-lever. An upward movement of the fastener by accident or other means tends to force the inner end of the fastening-lever more firmly into the fabric.
By my improved construction of a fastener the fastener is automatically secured to the fabric and is instantly released from the fabric when required.
