ADJUSTABLE BRACKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 7 68,929, dated August 30, 1904.
Application filed February 2, 1904. Serial No. 191,710. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED BREESE, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at '7 5 Aldermanbury, in the city and county of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Brackets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in adjustable brackets; and it has for its object the production of a bracket simple in form, easily and cheaply constructed, and effective in use for the various purposes for which brackets are employed.
In order that my said invention may be readily understood, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which V Figure 1 is a sectional view of my improved bracket in its locked position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the bracket in its unlocked position ready for adjustment. 'Fig. 1 is a sectional view showing the slide and wedge or gripping mechanism outside of the support. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 illustrate a modified form of outside gripping mechanism, and Fig. 8 shows a modified form of inside gripping mechanism.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Referring first to Figs. 1 to 3, (0 represents the slide, adapted to slide inside a slotted support 5. Pivoted at 0 in a slot d in said slide is an arm or bracket 6, (pivoting in a direct line :0 m with the central longitr'idinal axis of the arm,) having at its inner enda recess f, adapted to receive a wedge g, said wedge being either a ball, sphere, or block, in the present case taking the form of a ball or sphere. To adjust the slide a at any desired position along the support 5, the arm 0 is slightly tilted upward upon its pivot 0, (see Fig. 3,) allowing the wedge to slightly recede into the recess or fork f, so that the slide a can now be slid along the support 6. To lock the slide when the desired position is attained, the arm 0 is moved down to the horizontal position or at right angles to the slide and support, thus raising and forcing the wedge g tightly against the inner face it of the support I), and thereby securely locking said slide.
Referring to Fig. 4, which illustrates my invention applied as an outside grip, the slide a is provided with forked jaws 2'11, (best shown in Fig. 6,) adapted to surround the support 6, the grip of the wedge 9 taking place on the face 1' of the support 6. 7
In Figs. 5 to 7, which illustrate a modified form of outside grip, the wedge is in the form of a block having a recess 70, adapted to be engaged by a knuckle Z on the pivoted arm or bracket, its center with that of the pivot coinciding in a direct line with the central longitudinal axis 00 w of the arm 6, the wedge g having its face m shaped to correspond with the surface it is to engage. The method of unlocking the grip is the same as hereinbefore set forthviz., an'upward tilt of the bracket or arm 6, causing the wedge to recede, as in Fig. 7, and to thereby free the slide.
While I have only in Figs. 5 to 7 shown the invention as applied to an outside grip, yet I may readily adapt the same for an inside grip, Figs. 1 to 3, as shown at Fig. 8, by altering the face at of the wedge g to conform to the interior shape of the support, in which caseI may reverse the positions of the knuckle land recess in relatively to that shown in Figs. 5 to 7.
Although I have only shown and described the grip applied vertically,'yet it is readily understood I may apply the. same in a horizontal or any other position by modifying the shape of the slide and position of pivot without varying the relative direct positions of the pivot and wedge. 1
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an adjustable bracket, the combination, with a suitable support, of a slide movable vertically thereon, an arm pivoted near its inner end to said slide, and means interposed between the ,end of the arm and the adjacent face of a support permitting the arm to be raised and frictionally holding it when brought to a horizontal position.
