Be it known that I, GEORGE K. WELLS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania,have in vented a new and useful Improvement in Scrapers and Cleaners for Flues,Pipes,

. te., of which the following is a specification.

Myinventionconsists of a scraper and cleaner for a flue, pipe, &c., embodying a head, blades thereon, and means for attachment of handles or other draft appliances, the construction vastly strengthening, simplifying, and reducing the expense of a device of the class, as will be hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a hollow head, preferably of cylindrical form, one end of which is closed, as at B, and provided with an eye C for attachment of an operating handle or device. To the exterior of the head are secured, by means of the screws D, the plurality of sets ofV outwardly-Haring blades E, of resilient metal, the edges E of which are adapted to come in contact with the wall of a flue, pipe, Sac., to be scraped and cleaned, Within which the device is placed.

G designates a cross-bar which occupies a position in the interior of the head A and has its ends riveted or otherwise firmly secured thereto. Y

H designates a swinging draw-bar, which has at its opposite ends the eyes J and K, respectively. The eye J is hung on the cross-bar G, whereby the draw-bar is freely connected with the cylinder A, and it extends from said crossbar through the cylinder and end blades E while the eye K is accessible at the end ofthe device opposite to the eye C.

The operation is as follows: Suitable handles, chains, rods, &c., are connected with the eyes C and K and the device is inserted into a flue or pipe to be cleansed and pushed or pulled therethrough, whereby the edges of the blades scrape and cleanse the wall of the flue or pipe, the blades yielding as occasion requires, while, however, being effectively held to their work, it being noticed that the cylinder A provides a strong and durable support and connection for the blades, while also firmly sustaining the cross-bar G as a vmeans for attachment of the draft-bar, the latter yielding laterally to any strain in said direction, thus relieving said draft-bar, the cap, and the eye of such strain, avoiding breakage of either of the same. When the blades are worn or fractured, they may be readily removed owing to the screws D and substituted by others, which may be as readily secured in position. The blades may also be placed in reversed position.

The cap B strengthens the end of the cylinder and prevents crushing in of the same, While also providing a firm and strong connection for the eye C, which is integral therewith, without being liable under ordinary circumstances to disconnection.

Again, the device is formed of aminimum of parts or members, and so is of a simple and inexpensive nature, while its necessary strength and durability are preserved.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In a scraper and cleaner, a hollow head, a blade on the exterior thereof, a cross-bar within said head, a draft-bar freely mounted on said cross-bar and laterally yielding thereon, and an attaching device on said head independent of said draft-bar.

2. A scraper and cleaner, consisting of a hollow head, a blade on the exterior thereof, a cap on one end of said head integral therewith, an attaching device on said cap, a cross-bar within said head, and a draft-bar freely mounted on said cross-bar.
