Description

istitu fts yLetters Patent No. 76,7` 69, dated April 14, 1868.
i IMPROVEMENT-IN STEAMENGINE VALVE-GEAR..
' itin Stigetnle niet@ tu intlgee itttttts rtteut mit. ranting partiti tttnna.
TO' ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
5e it known that LSAM'UEL S. .TAM-Iscar, Jr.,^'ot` Saltsburg, in the county of Indiana, and State of Penusylvania, have invented a new and-'improved Valve-Gear for Steam-Engine; and I do hereby declare' that'the* following is a'vfull, clear, und exactdeserption of the vconstruction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part ot' this specification, in which- Figure lis u side elevation.
Figure 2 is a top view.
Figure?) is a. longitudinal vertical section.
Figure 4 is a c'rossjsect-i'on through the line a: x of' iig. 2.
Figure 5 is a. cross-scction through the line y g/ of `ig..2.
In this invention, ,the valve-gear is worked directlyby'the cross-head, the enginebeing'thereby greatly simplified, and the power that operates the valves being more economically applied than n any other engine.
In the drawings, A represents the cylinder, B the steam-chest, C the piston-rod, D the pitman, E the crank-,l` thenmiu shaft, G the fly-wheel, and II the bed upon which the engine-is supportedi- All'these parts nre in nowiseidierent from similar parts of other steam-engines, Aand I lay n`o claim toi invention upon them.
vMy invention consists iu ope-rating the main valve-stem I,by the cross-head C", by means of the device which I will now describe,
0n. the outside of the slidediurs K K, I attach two plates or bars ot' metal,- M M, which slide back and forth longitudinally with the slide-bars. Each sliile,lM, isnttaehed to the slide-bar on which it works by means of a block, m, which slides back and t'ortlrin guide-groovesnear the outer end of the slide-bars,'there being one block to each slide-har, and the pituaan' working between them. At their inner end, the slides M M v.are connected by u strong metnllitc block, N, which extends'across the space hetween'the slide-bars, its ends fitting in .guide-grooves on their inner sides, and its central portion so enlarged that the piston-rod 'can workthrough an aperture init, as secn`in g. 5. I l
The outer ends of the slides M M' :1re bolted to the sliding blocks m m by 1erew-lmlts da, which pass through longitudinal slots e c in the slide-bars, as seen in figs.` 1, 2, 3,Y and-4.
The inner ends ofthe slides-ure attached to the block N by screw-bolts a" a', which also work in longitudinal slots t' z' in the slide-barsi' I The cross-head C moves hack and forth between Vthe blocks N and m m, strikingthe former, and pushing it in towards thecylinder, on its inward stroke, and striking against projecting 'shoulders on the latter, and pushing them outward, on `its outward stroke.`
The blocks mm N, and the slides M M, being all connected together, os above described, willall move in out together,.by the operation of the cross-head, in the manner described.
I then connect the slides M M with the valve-'stem I by means of -n. lever', J, working on a. fulerum, j, near `itseentr'e, by which arrangement, atevery stroke of the piston, the cross-head C, will reverse the valves.
'lhe lever .I may he provided with a handle, L, by which thee'ngine can be reversed by hand.
This device is, perhaps, the simplest that can beconstrueted for the purpose ot' operating the valve-gear of steam-engines. It dispenses with the valvc-eceentries, eccentric-rods, Ste., and greatly reduces the cost of the engine. It also works the vnlve-genr by the direct power of the whole engine applied to the greatest advantage.
The blocks mm and N cnn be adjusted or. the A slides so as to out cti` the steam at any part of the stroke that may be thought desirable.
In order to prevent jarring, and give the engine nn easy, noiseless' action, I adjust rubber-spring eushions, s s, on the side of vthe blocks m and N towards the cross-head, which receive the stroke of the cross-head,
Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination ot' the slides M M, blocks mim N,-le ver J, valve-stem I, and cross-head C', when the said parts are constructed and arranged so as to operate the valve-gear from the cross-head, substantially as described.
2. The arrangement of the springs s s with th'efblocksm, and N, substantially as specified.
