PATENT OFFICE.
DOCTOR F. TAYLOR, OF, HEFLIN, ALABAMA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE L: HADDEN, OF HEFLIN, ALABAMA.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 767,531, dated Augustl 16, 1904,
Application fled September 23, 1903. Serial No. 174,295. (No model.)
To LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DOCTOR F. TAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Heflin, in the county of Cleburne, State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in l/Vrenches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wrenches, and more particularly to the class of ratchet-wrenches, the object of the invention being to provide a simple form of wrench whereinthehead and jaws may be rotated in either direction by oscillation of the handle.
A further Object of the invention is to provide a Wrench comprising but few parts so formed as to permit of manufacture at a low cost and to insure an eii'icient operation.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is an elevation showing a wrench embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the handle of the wrench and illustrating the ratchet mechanism. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the head of the wrench, illustrating the means for adjusting the jaws.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a wrench comprising a handle 5, which is bifurcated at one end to form the spaced arms 6 and 7, through which are alining perforations in which is mounted the hollow shaft 8, having thereon a ratchet-wheel 9, which lies between the arms 6 and 7 Through the handle 5 is a perforation 10, and leading from the ends of said perforation to the space between the arms 6 and 7 are slots 11 and 12, in Which are disposed and pivoted pawls 13 and 14. The pawls are movable on their pivots for engagement of either with the wheel 9 to permit of rotation thereof 'in one direction only. In the perforation 10 is a helical spring 15, which bears against the pawls 13 and 14: and serves to hold their wheel-engaging ends yieldably toward each other. A
dle 5 and has a recess 17 in its inner face, which is adapted to receive either of the spring-pressed ends of the pawls to permit of movement of the opposite end into engagement with the ratchet-Wheel, while the other pawl is held by the sleeve out of engagement. By rotating the sleeve the position sof the pawls may be reversed, it being understood 'that by holding the shaft 8 loosely and oscillating' the handle the shaft will be rotated in one direction with a step-by-step movement, the direction of rotation depending upon which pawl is active.
The shaft 8 carries a head at one end consisting of the spaced members 18 and 19 and the connecting-Web 20, which latter is attached to the shaft. The inner faces of the members 18 and 19 are recessed adjacent to the web 20, as illustrated at 21, and in these recesses are slidably received the broadened ends 22 of the stems 23 of clamping-jaws 24, which latter project or lie beyond the free ends of the members 18 and 19, While the stems 23 lie between such members. The jaws are slidable toward and away from each other, and to give to them such movement a right and left screw 25 is mounted in a recess 26 in the member 18 of the head of the wrench, said screw being received in the recess for somewhat more than half its circumference, so that portions only of the threads thereof project into the interspace between the members 18 and 19 for engagement with the threaded recesses 27 in the edges of the stems 23 of the jaws. The recesses 27 are threaded oppositely to correspond to the threads of the screws, so that when the screw is rotated in one direction the jaws are moved toward each other and when rotated in the opposite direction they are separated. A projection 28 on the wall of the recess 26 engages a peripheral groove 29 in the screw 25 and prevents longitudinal displacement of the screw. In the The opening of the hollow shaft 7 is continued through the web 20, so that when the wrench is to be used upon a nut on a long bolt the latter may pass through the shaft to permit of engagement of the jaws with the nut.
What is claimed is- A ratchet-wrench comprising a handle having a shaft mounted therein and provided with a ratchet wheel, oppositely disposed pawls carried by the handle, means for holding either of the pawls out of engagement with the ratchet-wheels, a head carried by the shaft comprising spaced members and a connecting-web, said members being slotted in their inner faces adjacentto the web, jaws ycomprising stems slidably mounted between said members and having enlargements at their ends engaging said slots, the stems of IS the jaws having recesses in their side faces provided with oppositely-disposed threads and one member of the head having a recess registering with the recesses of the stems and a right and left screw mounted in the recess of 20 the head member and engaging the threaded recesses of the stems of the jaws.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DOCTOR F. TAYLOR. Witnesses:
A. E. OARRUTH, Jos. M. EVANS.
