Description
UNITED STATES Patented August 9, 190%.
PATENT OEEIeE.
HAIR-RESTORATIVEQ SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 166,984, dated August 9, 1904. Application filed November 17, 1902. Serial No.13l,'759. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, VIRGINIA F. Bnnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Compositions for Treating the Hair, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to medical compounds, and more especially to compositions for treating the hair, partly to restore its natural color, but which may also be used for cleansing purposes and as a tonic for preserving the hair and scalp in good and healthful condition.
The object of the invention is to provide an effective compositionfor the purposes above mentioned which contains no acids or other substances of a nature injurious to the hair, scalp, or brain and has no efl'eetupon any part of the system excepting those which it is intended to produce.
In making my compound I proceed as follows, using'the ingredients and substantially the proportions hereinafter stated: One and one-half (1 ounces of henna-leaves, finely ground, are macerated with twelve (12) ounces of cold water for about four 1) hours. The mixture is then placed in a porcelain vessel, boiled for about fifteen (15) minutes, and then allowed to cool. WVhen cold, it is placed in any suitable percolator and sufficient cold water added to make the percolate measure thirteen (13) ounces. This percolate is then mixed with the followingingredients: aromatic spirits of ammonia, two (2) drains; Fowlers solution of arsenic,'two (2) drams; alcohol, four (4:) drams, and oil of rose-geranium, two (2) drops. After this mixture the compound is ready for use. The method of applying and using it is as follows: The hair is first washed clean and dried, after which the composition is applied to all parts of the hair, preferably with a small brush, and allowed to dry. The compound being perfectly harmless and producing no injurious effects of any kind, it can be applied to the hair three or four times a day, the hair being allowed to dry in the intervals. used beyond that required for making the application to all parts of the hair, since if the composition stains the skin such stains can be immediately removed with soap and water,
Besides being effective for the described purpose, with natural hair my compound can also be used for coloring artificial hair, such as switches and false fronts, such artificial hair being simply washed and dried and then soaked in the compound.
No extreme or special care need be Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A compound for the described purposes, composed of henna-leaves, aromatic spirits of ammonia and arsenic, in the'proportion substantially as described.
2. A compound for the described purposes, composed of henna-leaves, ammonia, and arsenic, withalcohol as a preservative.
3. A compound. for the described purposes, composed of henna-leaves, aromatic spirits of ammonia, Fowlers solution, alcohol, and oil of rose-geranium.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 10th day of July, 1902.
VIRGINIA F. BEEDE.
