To fir/Z whom t 'n1/ay cori/cerva- Be it known that I, MAURICE KANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Austin, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hay-Rakes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.

This invention relates to the rake-head and the means for securing' the teeth thereto in an adjustable manner.

The invention has for its objects to simplify the construction, to provide a rake with a tooth-supporting bar or head oi' such iorm in cross-section as will afford a greater resistance to flexure strains in proportion to its weight than those in common use, anda surface that is better adapted to receive a light, durable, and inexpensive tooth-holder that may be adjusted to any position along' the longitudinal direction of the head without reducing' the strength of the same by providing holes in it for the reception of the securing-bolts.

The same reference-numerals designate like parts throughout the several figures.

The numeral l represents the rake-head, which is substantially T shape in cross-section, having' the horizontal web portion 2 and the perpendicular web portion 3.

4. is the tooth-holder, provided with a grooved L-shaped seat 5, adapted to receive and retain the end of the tooth 6 in a common manner. The tooth-holder 4. is provided with a depending' shoulder portion7 on its rear end arranged to iit against the rear edge of the head, and 8 is an inturned lip forming' a part oi' said shoulder portion and desig'ned to projector catch hook-like under the web 2 and secure that end of the tooth-holder against upward movement. The tooth-holder projects beyond the front edge of the rake-head and is provided with a liolt-receiving .hole outside the same and a boss-like addition to its thickness approximately equal to that ot' the web to which it is attached, the location of the hole being' such as will bring' the securing-bolt close to the edge of the web and the thickness oI the boss such as will bring its face in line with the lower surface of the web, so that the head of the bolt, its nut, or washer may have a partial bearing on said' surface and securely hold the tooth-holder in position.

The modified form of tooth-holder consists in providing a diii'erent securing means at the front end, as shown in Figs. 4, 5, and 7, a separable piece 9, provided with the hook portion .10, the bearing-face 11, and the hole for the reception of the bolt l2, the body of the tooth-holder being provided with the vertical rib 13, adapted to meet the bearing-face oi' the separate piece 9, and also provided with a I threaded hole coincident with that through the said piece for the reception oi' the bolt l2.

Other means and 'forms may be used in connection with the tooth-holder-securing mechanisni without departing from the spirit ot' the invention.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In a hay-rake, the combination ot' a rakehead or tooth-supporting' bar oiI substantially T shape in` cross-section, a tooth-holder having a tooth-receiving groove on its lower surface, a hook portion at one end adapted to engage with one edge of the upper surface or web of the head, a bolt-receiving hole at the opposite end outside the width of the head, a depending rib surrounding a part of the said hole, said rib having' a thickness approximating that oi' the said web, and a bolt having' the lower surface of the web and the upper surface of the tooth-holder held between its nut and head.
