SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,674, dated August 2, 1904.

Be it known that I, EDWARD l IARTIN DOLAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Logansport, in the county of Cass and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Metallic Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to metallic ties; and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a metallic tie adapted to be used for railroad purposes, the said tie being made from a single sheet of metal having its edges riveted together along its central longitudinal axis. The tie in cross-section is of peculiar formation and is adapted to receive blocks of wood, which extend under those portions of the tie upon which the rail rests. The top of the tie is provided with suitable spike perforations and openings, into which levers may be inserted for removing the said blocks.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tie. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the tie. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the tie cut on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the tie, and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the blocks.
The tie consists of a sheet of metal having the upper flat surface 1 and the vertical side walls 2 2, at the lower edges of which are formed the lower horizontal sections 3 3, which extend parallel to the upper side 1. The edges of the sheet are then carried up at an acute angle to each other, forming the slanting inner sides 4: i, and the extreme upper edges are overlapped, as at 5, and are riveted to the longitudinal axis of the top 1. It will thus be seen that on each side of the slanting walls or sides at 4: polygonal compartments are formed, each of which is adapted to receive a block 6 of similar contour.
The top 1 of the tie is provided with suitable spike-perforations 'T 7, which are adapted to receive the spikes which secure the rails 8. The bases of the said rails rest upon the top 1, thus avoiding the necessity of the use of base-plates, and the spikes 9 enter the blocks 6. The side walls 2 2 are provided with slots 11, the metal from which is bent in forming the tongues 12, which act as stops for the blocks 6*that is, the said blocks 6 are driven into the ends of the tie until their inner ends come in contact with the tongues 12. The top of the tie is provided with the elongated openings 13, through which the end of a lever may be inserted for removing the blocks 6 from the tie.
It will be observed that the blocks 6 are located under the rails and add considerable rigidity to the tie at these points and that the central portion of the tie is hollow, and consequently possesses a certain amount of flexibility. In embedding the tie the ballast is tamped up in the space between the inner walls 4 4t, and thus the tie is firmly held to the roadbed.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A tie consisting of a sheet of metal having an intermediate portion forming its top and its edges carried back and riveted together along the central longitudinal axis of the top.
2. A tie consisting of a sheet of metal having an intermediate portion forming its top and its edges carried back and riveted together and also riveted to the top of the tie along the central longitudinal axis thereof.
3. A tie consisting of a sheet of metal having an intermediate portion forming its top, block-compartments formed under said top, the extreme edges of said sheet being carried back and overlapped and secured together and also to said top whereby the block-compartments are spaced apart.
a. A tie consisting of a sheet of metal having block-compartments formed at its ends and block-stops located in the vertical walls of said compartments.
