Be it known that I, HERBERT D. HOUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lockets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

My invention relates particularly to boxlockets provided with bails. This class of lockets has commonly had the bail hard-soldered directly upon the locket-body. The heat involved in hard-soldering anneals and defaces the precious metal of the body exterior, thereby weakening the structure adjacent the bail. Soft solder, which is applied at a much lower temperature, may be utilized Without detriment on parts other than the bail where the chief strain is encountered.

To obviate the above-recited disadvantages and attain other advantageous results in thin lockets, my invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of my novel locket; Fig. 2, a like view of the shell; Fig. 3, a similar view of the same with lining inserted; Fig. 4, a face view of the field-piece; Fig. 5, a top plan view of the picture-holder, and Fig. 6 a transverse central section of the entire locket in nearly-closed position.

My locket comprises a body A, connected by a hinge a to a cover B. The body consists of a preferably rectangular shell 5, having upright walls 1) If N7). Two of these walls, 6 5 have slots 0 and a, respectively, cut in their respective margins. Restingin the bottom of the shell is the usual lining-plate (Z. (Shown in Fig. 3.) Resting upon the lining-plate (Z and with its top surface flush with the top of the shell-walls is the field-piece, which in detail is constructed as follows: A frame a has upon each of two of its sides marginal projections ff and g g and upon a third side the hinge parts it. The frame has its side opposite the hinge parts notched (i) to receive the catch 1' upon the cover B. To the ends of projections f and g is hardsol ;lered the bail O prior to the insertion of the field-piece into the shell 6, thus avoiding the application of heat to the precious metal of the shell. Vhen the fieldpiece is applied to the shell, the projections f 9 rest in the slots 0 and a, respectively. After the insertion of the field-piece the portrait-holder is inserted frictionally into the field-piece and flush therewith. The portraitholder comprises a flanged frame Z, embracing a pane or sheet of transparent material 1.

The cover is provided with an interior flange m, in which is inserted a portrait-holder '21, like that above described and shown in Fig. 5.

Having described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a locket of the class described, the combination with the shell provided with slots of a field-piece in the shell, projections upon the field-piece resting in the slots, and a bail fixed to the ends of said projections.

2. In a locket of the class described, the combination with the shell provided with marginal slots, of a field-piece within the shell, projections upon the field-piece traversing the slots, and a bail fixed to the ends of said projections.

3. In a locket of the class described, the combination with the shell provided with slots, of a field-piece within the shell, projections upon the field-piece restingin the slots, a bail fixed to the ends of said projections, and a portraitholder within and frictionally engaging the field-piece.
