WATER-TUBE BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 766,583, dated August 2, 1904.

Be it known that I, THOMAS J. BARBOUR, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vater-Tube Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The present invention relates more particularly to that class of tubular boilers used for marine purposes, although as well adapted for stationary work, the object of the invention being to procure a free and unimpeded circulation of the water through the water-tubes to the steam-drum. to dispense with sectional water-heads commonly used for this class of boilers, to dispense with unions or end couplings for the water-tubes, to provide a water-jacketed tubular lire-box, to increase the efficiency of this type of boilers, and to prolong the life of the boiler by reducing to a minimum liability of the tubes becoming scale-clogged.
To comprehend the invention, reference must be had to the accompanying sheet of drawings, wherein- Figure l is a front view in elevation of a furnace, partly broken away, with the improved tubular boiler applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, in side elevation, taken on line a: m, Fig. l of the drawings. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional plan view, partly broken away, taken on line ;1 Fig. 2 of the drawings. Fig. i is a vertical sectional view taken on line '21 n, Fig. 2 of the drawings; and Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on line 'I 11), Fig. 2 of the drawings.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 is used to indicate the furnace, within which the watertube boiler is arranged. The boiler comprises a series of water-circulating boiler-tubes 2, which tubes connect, respectively, with the interior of the water-heads3 4. These heads are non-sectional and free of interior partition-plates, although the walls thereof are united by stay-bolts 5. As thus connected, a free circulation of the water through the tubes 2 is obtained. The rear water-headprefer- Serial No.14'7,235. (No model.)
ably communicates directly with the steamdrum 6, which drum is connected with the forward water-head 3 by means of the larger water-circulating tubes 7, Fig. 20f the drawings.
The forward or front water-head 3 is formed with the depending water-legs 8 8, which form the forward end of the lire-box 9, the rear end of the fire-box being formed by the transverse bridge-wall 10. said wall extending to within a shortdistance of the tubes 11, forming the top wall of the fire-box 9. Communication is thus established between the lire-box and the combustion-chamber 12, the rear wall of which is formed by the lower portion of the rear water-head 4. IVithin the fire-box 9 is arranged any suitable form of grate 13. The sides of the fire-box are formed of the water-tubes 14:, which tubes connect the depending water-legs 8 8 with the rear water-head 4. Thetubes l1 and 14 I shall term the firebox tubes, the same being preferably somewhat larger than the boiler-tubes 2.
By means of the disclosed arrangement of the lire-box tubes a water-tube-jacketed firebox is produced, the upper wall of which is formed by the tile-plates 15 and the side walls of tile-plates 15, which tile-plates are formed of refractory material. These tile-plates extend, preferably, to point I) a slight distance beyond the bridge-wall 10, Fig. 2 of the draw- 1ngs.-
The water circulates from head 3 to head 4 through the lire-box tubes 11 and let and thence through the boiler-tubes 2 as heated, gradually ascending until the drum-tubes 7 are reached. These tubes convey the heated water into steam-drum 6, which, as discharged from the tubes 7, strikes against the deflecting-plate 16, secured within the steam-drum. This deflecting-plate prevents the water intel-mixing with the steam within the upper portion of the drum and, in fact, directs same toward the water-head A.
The fire within the fire-box 9 is confined and prevented from coming in direct contact with the boiler-tubes 2 by means of the refractory Wall 15,which deflects the flame toward and.
into the combustion-chamber 12. From'this combustion-chamberthe hot products ofcombustion freely ascend and envelop the nest of boiler-tubes, being confined and deflected to ward the chimney by the top wall 17, supported by the drum-tubes 7 Inasmuch as the fire-box 9 is water-tube jacketed it is obvious that the heating area for the circulating water is considerably augmented and a more rapid heating of the water obtained than where the heat simply bears against an upper layer of water-tubes.
The construction of the boiler is materially simplified by connecting all the water-circulating tubes to a common pair of water-heads over coupling connection of the water-circulating. tubes, and a freer circulation of the water procured and liability of scale-clogging of the tubes materially reduced bythe employment' of non-sectional water-heads over sectional water-heads and couplings for-the ends of the circulating-tubes.
Bythe described construction of a watertube boiler free and unimpeded circulation of thewater is provided for.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be protected by Letters Patent, is-
A water-tube boiler comprising an inclosing casing, apair of non-sectional water-heads, the lower portion of which forming the front and rear wall of the combustion-chamber, circulating-tubes extending between the heads, fire-box tubes communicating with the respective heads and inclosing the fire-box, a deflector-plate arranged intermediate the fire-box and circulating-tubes adjacent said fire-box, supplemental tubes extending between the steam-drum and forward head, said tubes being arranged adjacent the top wall of the casing and supporting the latter, a chimney ex tending upwardly from the top walladjacent the drum, and a deflector-plate intermediate the circulating and supplemental tubes extending forwardly from the rear head to a point beyond the chimney-opening.
