TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, JsnsDIAII I. Foes, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook, and 'State, of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hanging Sleeping-Gar Berths; and I do hereby declare and make known that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the coach:- ponying drawings, and the letters and figures marked thereon, which form part of this specification.

I My said invention consists in a hinge of novel construction, whereby sleeping-car berths can be securely and conveniently attached to the car, in such .a manner as to be readily let down intoa horizontal position for use, or to beas readily folded up against the walLor side of the ear, out of the way, as desired.

.My invention further consists in hinging sleeping-ear berths to the partitions between the. contiguous compartments, instead of to the sides of the. car, substantially as hereinafter specified, while,-'at the same time, the berths fold up against the sides of the car, and are let. down into position'fo-r use, as before described.

To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed todescribe its construction and operation withparticulnrity, making reference, in so doing, to the aforesaid drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a plan view of one section of a sleeping-car, showing the berth in position for use, and my invention applied thereto.

Figure 2 is a side view of one of said sections, showing the berth turned up against the side of the car.

Figure 8 is a detached view of my said hinge, represented in the same position as infig. 1"; and

Figure 4 is an end view of said hinge, represented as seen in fig. 2.

Similar letters of reference in the difi'erentiigures denote the same parts of my invention.

A represents the side of the car, and B B the partitions between. one section of the car and the adjoining sections separating it therefrom.-

C represents the berth, the upper side being shown in fig. "1,.and tlre lower side in fig. 2.

In the said partitions B, between-thedifferont sections of the car; are constructed suitable recesses or sockets to receive'the metallic boxes 6 b, entering said sockets, and-being firmly secured therein, by means of screws passing through a flange, 0, upon said boxes, and into the partitions B- B, as shown, or in any other suitable manner, thus securing the said boxes I) b to the said partitions BB, in a mannerto afford the requisite strength and permanency in supporting the berths, as hereinafter set-forth.

Upon each end of the berths, near that edge thereof-which lies adjacent to the side of'the car, when in the position shown in fig. 1, are secured upon the under side of thcbcrth by screws, asshown, or-iu any other suit.- able manner, the metallic plates 0 c, which areprorided with pins, lugs, projections, or their equivalent, marked (7, which enter the boxes Z7 6, as shown, turning freely in said boxes, when the berth is turned up or down. as desired.

The said journals or pivots (1 cl may besecurcd to the ends of the berth, so as'to enter said journal-hence, b b, in any other strong and permanent manner.

By the above-described arrangement of the hinge, it will readily be seen that the berth is hinged in a strong and permanent manner to the partitions between the sections, instead of to the side of the car, as in the ordinary mode, and in such amanner as to allow the requisite movement to the berth in arranging it for use, or in turning it up against the side of the car, out of the way, when not in use.

By this arrangement, the hinge can he made much stronger and more durable, and much less liable to get out of order than hinges oi the ordinary construction, as applied to sleeping-car berths.

When the berth is turned down for use, its front edge may be supported in the required position by any suitable rest or support.

Having fully described the construction and operation of my invention, I will now specify what I claim,

and desire to'seeure by Letters Patent.

I claim the combination of'the boxes 6, and the spindles cl, when arranged, with respect to the partitions B and berths C, so as to operate substantially as and for the purposes specified. J. I. FOGG.
