SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Batent No. 765,593,, dated July 19, 1904. Application filed December 5, 1903. Serial No. 183,981. (No model.)

To all whonz it may concern.-

Be it known that I, WILLIAM PETERSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lyons, in the county of Clinton and State of Iowa, have inventeda new and usefulLatch, of which the following is a specification.

My object is to prevent the dangers, accidents, and damages incident to hinged barndoors swinging and swaying and striking horses passing through an open doorway when open doors are not fastened in an open position.

My invention consists in a latch adapted for retaining a hingeddoor locked by means of a padlock and also adapted for fastening the door in an open position and is constructed and applied as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in the claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my latch in position relative to a striker as required when in practical use. Fig. 2 shows the latch applied to a hinged door as required to retain the door closed and locked. Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional View on a horizontal line through a section of a wall and a barn-door hinged thereto and retained in a fastened open position by means of the latch and a striker fixed to the outside of the wall.

The numeral 10 designates astraight metal bar that may vary in size and weight, as desired. A keeper 12, in the form of a metal plate having an integral loop 13 and perforations at its ends and adapted to be fixed against a door, is permanently connected with the latch 10 by first extending the latch through the loop 13 and then fixingahandle to the latch in the form of a loop 14, that has projections on its ends adapted to serve as rivets to extend through perforations in the latch and clenched fast on the inside of the latch, or the ends of the handle may be fixed to the latch by welding or in any suitable way as required to fix the handle securely in its place to project outward, as shown.

The rear end of the handle is perforated and adapted to be pivotally connected with a door by means of a flat disk 15, that has an integral perforated loop 16, through which a screw or bolt 17 can be passed and also through the hole in the end of the latch. The other end of the latch is bent outward at right angles and provided with an aperture to serve as a hasp for locking the latch by means of a staple 18, fixed in the wall, as shown in Fig. 2, for applying a common padlock.

A striker 19 is fixed in the wall to engage the latch when the door is closed, as required to retain the door closed. A corresponding striker 20 is fixed to the wall, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, to be engaged by the handle 14 when the door is open, as required to hold the door open until it is to be again closed. A latchlifter 21 of common form is pivoted in a slot in the door and extended outward under the latch 10, as shown in Fig. 3, so a person on the inside of the door can lift the latch on the outside of the door, as required to open the door. A handle 22 is also fixed to the inside of the door to facilitate moving the door.

Having thus described. the purpose of my invention, its construction, application, and operation, the utility thereof will be readily understood by persons familiar with the use of hinged barn-doors, and

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v The combination of a door-latch, adapted to look a hinged door in a closed position and also adapted to fasten it in an open position, pivoted to a door and bent outward at right angles at its free end and apertured for connecting apadlock therewith and also provided with a handle for lifting the latch, a staple fixed in the wall contiguous to the end of said right-angled apertured end of the latch and a striker fixed in the wall to engage the handle on the latch substantially as shown and described for the purposes stated.
