SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 765,496, dated July 19, 1904.

To all whmn it may concern:

Be it known that I, EXELorHAs LANOUETTE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fitchburg, in the county of WVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Boards, of which the following is a specification.

'My invention relates to improvements in what are known as ironing-boards, particularly for household use or in laundries using the hand smoothing or sad iron. It has for its object, among other things, to provide for ironing the usual articles of wearing-apparel thustreated, more especially, however, for gentlemen, as shirts, collars, and the like, as well as ladies shirt-waists, &c.

Said invention is also characterized for its Simplicity, can be cheaply manufactured, and is readily supported and applied for use as needed.

It consists of the detailed construction and combination of parts, including their arrangement, substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed, and specifically pointed out by the description following.

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation. Fig. 2is a plan view with the sleeve board or extension in operative position. Fig. 3 is an end elevation. Fig. 4 is a folded-up view of the same. Fig. '5 is a detail section of the fastening device. Fig. 6 is a view of a childs -sleeve board.

In carrying out my invention I produce the ironing-board 1, preferably as shown, securing one end to a transversely-arranged bar or piece 2, having pendent lugs or hangers 3 3, one secured thereto upon its under side near each end, said hangers being preferably right-angled plates, one provided with a vertical lower end-opening slot 3 and the other having a horizontal laterally-opening slot 3 Nails, screws, or. other suitable means, inserted at the desired point in 'the wall or wainscoting of the room, are designed to be engaged by said hangers for supporting that end of the ironing-board in position when in use, the horizontal slot first receiving one nail or projection, the board being held at the Serial No. 169,209. required angle, and then by bringing the other slot in alinement with the other nail or screw the last named will enter said slot, thus connecting said end of board thereto. Also to the under side of the cross piece or bar 2 is connected, preferably by hinging or pivoting, one end of a brace 4:, the opposite end of said brace being detachably connected to the under side of the board 1, preferably by means of a hook 4:, connected to said brace and engaging an eye or staple 4: depending from said board, said latter end of said brace, however, being chamfered and entering or engaging a recess or notch 4 produced in said board for stability. Said brace is also formed in two parts orsections hinged or pivoted together, as at 4 to permit one section or part to rest vertically against the wall and the other section or part to extend diagonally from the first-referred-to section in effecting its engagement with the board, as shown, the same thus serving as a support or brace for the board at a point intermediately of its length somewhat nearer the outer end thereof.

A supplemental board 5 of the desired outline is pivotally connected at one end to the under side of the board 1 at a suitable point, said connection being efiected, preferably, by a thumb-nut-provided screw-bolt 6, fixed in board 1 and passing or depending through the board 5, a washer being inserted upon said bolt between said thumb-nut and board 5, the purpose of which is obvious. Said board 5, preferably having secured thereon an additional piece 5 at its point of connection with the board 1 for reinforcement at that point, is designed as a sleeve -ironing board, the using of which is apparent.

As disclosed by Fig. 6, a smaller board 7 may be substituted for the sleeve-board 5 for ironing the sleeves of a childs garment, the latter board being removed and the same means employed for holding it being applied for the retention in place of the board 7 upon the board 1.

This contrivance is simple, cheap of manufacture, and readily put into position when needed for use, as well as capable of compact storage when not in demand.

Having thus described my invention, what vertically and the other section having its free end adapted to engage at its free end a notch in the under side of said ironing-board.
