PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 764,932, dated July 12, 1904.`
Application led December 3, 1903. Serial No. 183,600- (No model.)
To a/Z whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VTLLIAM J. EN EARL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Montevista, inthe county of Rio Grande and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved lump, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in pumps for general use, and particularly adapted for pumping water from mines or deep shafts, an object being to provide a pump of simple construction and so arranged that the packings are wholly protected from sand or g'rit and may be readily tig'htened when necessary without stopping the pump.
I will describe a pump embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specilication, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevationl of a pump embodying my invention, and Eig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof.
Referring' to the drawings, 1 designates the barrel of the pump, bolted to a valve-casing 2, which is also bolted to the suction-pipe 3. Arranged in the valve-casing 2 is a springpressed valve 4, and operating in the barrel is a tubular plunger 5, carrying a springpressed valve 6 at its lower end. By making the part 2 removable from the barrel 1 and from the suction-pipe 3 the valves may be readily reached for repairing or the like.
An operating-rod 7 connects with a crosshead 8, and from this cross-head rods 9 extend downward through a iixed cross-head 10 and connect with arms 11 on the tubular plunger 5. The barrel 1 is connected to the fixed cross-head 10 by means of rods 12, and from this fixed cross-head 10 supporting-rods 13 extend upward to engage with any suitable framing or the steam-cylinder.
A discharge-pipe 14 extends into the plunger 5 and communicates with an opening' 15 in the fixed cross-head 10, and from this opening a discharge-pipe 16 leads upward to the top of the shaft or mine. The upper end of the barrel 1 has an enlarged portion 17 in which a packing-ring 18 is arranged to engag'e with the outer side of the plunger 5, and this packing-ring' may be adjusted or pressed against Vthe plunger by means of a collar 19, engaging with the upper edge of said ring and operated by means of screw-bolts 20, which engage in tapped holes in the flange or arms' on the upper end of the barrel. Engaging with the inner side of the plunger opposite the ring 18 is another packing-ring 21. The lower edge of this packing-ring engages with an annular shoulder 22, formed on the lower end of the discharge-pipe 14, and it is adjusted by means of a tubular gland 23, surrounding said pipe and connected with a fixed cross-head 10 by means of screw-rods 24. By means of the bolts and rods 2O and 24 it is obvious that the parts 23 and 19 may be readily and quickly adjusted while the pump is in operation.
The/operation of the pump is quite obvious-that is, uponthe upward movement of the plunger the valve 4 will be opened to admit water, and then as the plunger moves downward the said .valve 4 will be closed and the Valve 6 opened, admitting water to the plunger, which will pass up through the pipes 14 and 16.V It is to be understood, however, that the pump is double-acting, forcing out Water at both strokes.
Having thus vdescribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A pump -comprising a barrel, a valve therein, a tubular plunger operating in the barrel, a valve in the plunger, a fixed crosshead, a packing-ring engaging against the inner side of the plunger, a tubular gland bearing upon said ring, adjustable connections between said gland and the cross-head,and a discharge-pipe passing through said gland.
2. A pump comprising a barrel, a valve in the lower portion thereof, a tubular plunger operating in the barrel, a valve in the lower end of the plunger, a fixed cross-head, a packing-ring engaging against the inner side of the plunger, a tubular gland engaging with said packing-ring, adjustable connection between said gland and said cross-Ahead, a packvhead, a tubular gland surrounding the discharge-pipe and engaging With the packingring, screw-rods connecting said gland with the cross-head, a packing-ring engaging with the outer side of the plunger, and an adjustable collar engaging With said ring.
4. A pump comprising a barrel, a valve in the lower portion thereof, a tubular plunger operating in the barrel, a valve carried by said plunger, a fixed cross-head, a ymovable cross-head, rods extended from said movable cross-head to connection With the plunger, the said rods passing through openings in the fixed cross-head, a` discharge-pipe extended from the fixed cross-head into the tubular plunger, and a discharge-pipe extended upward from said fixed cross-head.
