Description
nitrh tetra @stent @ffice E. R. HALL, OF UTIOA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSE'LF, AND D. M. GOLDEN, OF
'FRANKFOR'R AND' B.4 G. EATON, OF MEXICO, NEW YORK.
Letters .Patent No; 76,441, dated April 7, 1868.
IMPRovsD CLOTHES-BRIEF..
To ALL wHoM 1T MAY c'oNeEnm Be it known that I, E. R. HALL, ,of Utica, iu the county of Oneida, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Drier;' and I do hereby deelare'that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, .which form a part of this speci'cation, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical sectionof my clothes-drier,A
Y .Figure 2 is a front'elevation of the same.
Figure 3 is a side view of the shaft and spools.
The` letter A represents the body of my drier, and B B two boxes, placed onl opposite sides of A.. The object of said boxes will be hereinafter explained. C designates an'elevator, which occupies the interior of the body'or ease A, and allowed to play .with a vertical rnotion. D represents a shaft, which'works near the bottom of'ease A.; the said shaft being furnished with threespools, e. Fastened to' the top of Aelevator is'an attachment, E, which is furnished on each of its four sides with two vertical projections, g. In the cavity formed between each pair of said projections, the ends of the arms h are placed, and allowed to play on pivots that secure them to projections g. Directly behind the end of each arm l1, is placed the spring s, the object of which will be hereafter explained. Each of arms is furnishedwith a'hinged extension, m, which can be folded back when required. n represents a friction-pulley, connected with each arm h, the use of which will be shown hereafter. It will be observed that the armsjt have numerous'perforations, into which rods or hooks can be inserted for 'supportingclothes F represents four pulleys, two of which 'are pivoted in each box 13 (see fig; 1,) onenear the top, and the other'near' the bottom of said box lor boxes. D repiresentsthe spool-shaft,
on which are the three spools e, as above stated. To the middle spool e, two tape-lines, t', are fastened, one of said lines being attaelxed'to the top and the other to the bottom of said spool. The lines z' are carried from spool e to the friction-pulleys F and ,FQ-and thence over the upper pulleys F, and fastened to elevator C, (shown in iig. 1 f represents a tape-line, of which thereare two, onebeing attached to each of the outside spools e. The upper ends of said linesare fastcnedto the bottom of elevator C, and are intended-to, arrest the upward motion of said elevator, when it has reached the desired height.` 7c represents a ratchet-wheel, placed on shaft D, outside o'fcasc A, the design of which isv to hold the elevator in iirm position when it is at the top of case A. H designa-tes the pawl, for holding the ratchet-wheel.
The operation of my machine is as follows: When the elevator is at its lowest position in case A, by moving the crank on shaft D from left to right, the two tape-lines s' c will be wrapped aroundthe centre spool e, and as the said lines are shortened by being` taken up by the spool, to the same degree will the elevator be carried upwards, until it reaches the top of case A, when'the arms, being released from confinement in said case, will be thrown in a horizontal position by the action oi' Athe spring s. VBy reversing the motion of the crank, the arms h will be broughtagain to a vertical position, so as to desceudin case A. The object of the pulleys n, on arms L, is to Facilitate the motion of said arrnswhen ascending in case A.
It will be observed thatthe top of the frame A, marked R, is adjustable, and only placedcin position when the drier is not'in use.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The springs s s s s, for throwing out the arms h h, substantially in the manner specified.
2. Thecombination of the elevator C. springs s s s s. andarms hh, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. Arms h @springs s s, elevator C, spools e e, and tape or cords f, all combined and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoingas my own, I aiiix my signature in presenceot` two witnesses.
