SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 764,353, dated July 5, 1904.
Application filed October 26, 1903. Serial No 178,523. (No model.)
This invention relates to improvements in T pipe-wrenches, wherein one of the jaws is made adjustable, so as to adapt the wrench to different diameters of pipe, &c.; and the object of my improvements is to provide a wrench of this characterwhich shall be strong and compact, with the wo'rking parts concealed and protected within the handle of the tool.
A further object is ,.to provide means for adjusting the movable jaw with the thumb or linger of the hand which grasps the tool.
I attain my objects by means of the construction and arrangement of the several parts of the device, as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the complete tool, and Fig. 2 a similar elevation with one of the side plates removed to show the interior mechanism.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the two views.
A and B represent two side plates which are shaped to form the handle or stock of the wrench, said plates being spaced apart a distance corresponding to the width of the jaws of the wrench by the parts C and E. The part O forms the fixed jaw of the wrench and also a portion of the slideway for a sliding wedge-piece F.
1) represents the movable jaw, which is pivoted at d between the plates A and B. This movable jaw is provided with an inwardly-projecting arm L'having a suitable bearing-face engaged by the incline H of the wedgepiece F. This wedge-piece F is in the form of a bar, the rearward portion of which is received by a slot 0 in part E, said slot being somewhat wider than the bar F in order to allow an oscillating movement of the bar therein, and at J said bar is provided with a boss, which forms a movable fulcrum-point, whereby the forward portion of the wedge piece may be pressed inward when operating it to adjust the jaw I). At 0 on the jaw-piece C are formed a series of serrations, which are engaged by corresponding serrations f on the forward part of the wedge-piece F. From the wedge-piece an operating-pin G projects out through a slot Z), formed between the parts C and E and the side plates A and B. This operatingpin is preferably provided with an enlarged head to furnish grippingsurface for the thumb or finger in operating the wedge-piece. The spring K bears upon the arm I of the movable jaw, with the double function of holding said jaw in its adjusted position and of holding the teeth of the wed gepiece F in engagement with the serrations c after said wedge-piece has been set for the proper adjustment of the jaw B. To adjust the movable jaw, the operating-pin Gr will be pressed inward by the thumb or linger of the hand which grasps the tool, thereby throwing teeth f out of engagement with teeth 0, after which the wedge-piece may be pushed forward or back by means of the operating-pin to throw the jaw ID to or from the jaw (l, as may be required. When the wedge-piece is released, the spring K, acting through the arm I and inclined surface H, will throw the teeth f and 0 again into engagement, thereby [ixing the jaw'D in its adjusted position.
The plate A is fastened to the plate B by means of a number of screws, by which also the fixed jaw C and the piece 1*) are also socured in place between the plates. This permits of the removal'of plate A for the purpose of renewing the parts inclosed thereby in case of wear or breakage. Instead of using screws, however, the plates may be fastened together by rivets, if so desired. Moreover, the pieces C and E may be formed integrally with one of the plates, although for the purposes of manufacture it will be easier to make them separate.
By this arrangement I attain a simple and effective adjusting mechanism consisting of a minimum number of parts, said parts being inclosed and protected by the two side plates which form the body of the handle or stock of the tool.
Having thus described my improvements,
what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A wrench comprising a handle having fixed and movable jaws projecting from one end thereof, the movable jaw being pivotally mounted in the handle and having an inwardlyprojecting arm, a sliding wedge-piece in engagement with said arm, a slideway in the handle to receive said wedge-piece, serrations on the slideway engaged by corresponding serra= tions on the wedge-piece, an operating-pin projecting from the wedge-piece through a slot in the handle, and a spring to press the arm of the movable jaw against the wedge-piece.
2. A wrench comprising a handle having fixed and movable jaws projecting from one end thereof, the movable jaw being pivotally mounted in the handle and having an inwardlyprojecting arm, a sliding wedge-piece in engagement with said arm, a slideway in the handle to receive said wedge-piece and in which the wedge-piece has also an oscillating movement, serrations on the slideway opposite the arm of the movable jaw, corresponding serrations on the forward end of the wedge-piece,
an operating-pin projecting from the wedgepiece through a slot in the handle, and a spring to press the arm of the movable jaw against the wedge-piece.
3. A wrench comprising a handle composed of two side plates spaced apart, fixed and movable jaws projecting from one end thereof, the movable jaw being pivotally mounted between the side plates and having an inwardlyprojecting arm, a sliding Wedge-piece in en gagement with said arm, a slideway between the side plates to receive said Wedge-piece,
