IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-EXTINGUISHERS.

Be it knownuthat I, EDWIN J. Toon, of Fort Madison, in the vcounty of Lee, and State Vof Iowa, have invented anewand useful Improvement in Lamp-Burners; and I d'o hereby declare and make known that the following is a full, clear, and exact dese'ri'ption'e-f -the -sa1 n'e, reference' being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters and igur'es marked thereon,` which form part of this specification.'

Upon the arm E a'stop or shoulder is formed, which comes up against tho lower side ot the-projectionF, just when the cone is`opened back as far as desired, and thus, in connection with the projection m aforesaid, forms a stop to the hinge of the cone tis-desired.

'.llhe'said. shaft H is provided with an ar-m, I, having a U-shapedend, which enters a loop, l, upon the regulating-slide L, so that the rotation of the said shaft will regulat'ethe wick, moving said toothed slide up and down as desired,'a spring, S, being used, if desired, to hold the regulator up to the wick, which will, however, permit the teeth to be withdrawn and turned down to give additional elevation to the wickwhen desired. The said shaft H is also provided with another arm, J, upon the opposite side of the wick-tube, at such a point as to lie above the lever e, operating on the arm E connected with the extinguisher.
v VWhen this improvement is applied to hurnershaving thc ratchet-wheel wickregi1lator, the shaft itself, or the longitudinal play which the shaft has or should have, may be made available, either directly o1*-`indiretly,
by meansof an arm or lever operating by or in combination with the shaft, as shown in model, when' it is being rotated, to remove the supportingmrm E from its rest, and'cause the cap B to fall upon the top ofthe wickftube as desired. y.
Having described the nature and construction of my invention, I will now describe the mode of its operation. I l
In iig. 2 theparts are shown in the position assumed when the lamp is not lighted or in use. When it is desired to light the lamp, the cone D is thrown back upon its hinge at L into the position indicated bythe dotted lines in fig. 3, when th'elarm E rests against a stop or rest, F, arranged within the` case of the burner, as shown, un'd-hereinbefore mentioned, and thus prevents the further backward movement of the cone 'upon its hinge, .enabling the ordinary hinge to be used at z. The -wick is thon turned up in the' ordinary manner, and the lamp is lighted. .At the same time that the movement of the cone causes the arm E to press against the stop F, as aforesaid, it draws the arm upwards'slightly, s o that the pressure ofthe stop F upon the arm E throws the foot of therarm-E into the slot b, and over its support, upon which it rests when the oone's closed, so as to hold the cover B away from the wick-tube', as desired, when the lamp is-in use, as indicated by the full lines in iig. 3. When it is desired to extinguish the .lamp the-shaft H is'revolved inthe direction to ,turn down the wick in thetube, which extinguishes the light, and `atthe same time the arm J, pressing down upon the lever e, -,applies the cap B upon the top of the tube, the elastirl detent el yielding to the pressure and resumingits former position. l Y I When the operation of applying the extinguisher is to be performed, as'above described, it is unnecessary to have thenger d project through the exterior case, but it may so project if desired. When the finger d does project through the case', andthe wick-regulating device is not arranged so as to operate' in vclosing the extinguisher, the wick may be turned down in, the ordinary way, and the cap or extinguisher beapplied by drawing the inger d from its support in the slot b, and allowing it'to resume the position shown in g. 2. The oiiice of the arm E being mainly to support the cover B while the lamp is in use, the closing of the cover upon the tube iseeuted by displacing the foot of the said 'arm E from its support, so as to 'allow'the cover 'to d rop upon tho tube, which displacement maybe effected by lthe means herein described, or in any other suitable manner. v
It may be observed that where the cones are hinged to the burners lso as toswing horizontally from over the Wicktube, the arrangement 'of the arms of the extinguisher may be readily modified, so that such movement 'of the cone shall remove the extinguisher from the wick-tubeLand substantially the same means as Vherein described may be luse-d to replace it. s 4
Having described the" construction andoperation of my invention, I will now specify what I claim, and desire to secure' by Letters Patent.
1. I claim so combining a hinged cone, D, extinguisher or cap B, and aconnecting-.arm C, or its vequva,`
lent, that the opening ofthe coue'will remove Athe extinguisher from theA wick-tube, substantially as herein specified aud set forth. I
2. In combination with said extinguisher, cone, and connecting-arm, I'claim the arrangement oi'- a suitable support E, to retain the extinguisher away `from the wick-tube when the c one is closed, substantially as hereinA speciiiedand described. v i
8. I claim the combination ot a finger, d, operating through a slot in'the external case of the burner, in combination with thearm vE, connecting-arm C, extinguisher B, and cone D, substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
4. I claiu1 in combination with the cone D, hingedv as described', and the arm E, arranged-in connection therewith substantially as described, a stop or rest, F, upon the ease of .the burner, arranged so as to sustain the cone in place, and prevent it swinging over upon its hinge, substantially in the manner described. 5. I claim, in combination 'with the extinguisherA B, lcone D, connccting-arm C, arm. E, provided with u. suitable rest and a lever, e, the shaft and arm J, arranged t0 operate substantially in the manner' herein set forth.
