Description

No. 752,445; PATENTED FEB. 16, 1904.
D. T. FOLEY. l
' TRUSS.
Agrmonron rum) AUG. 5, 190a.
I UNITED STATES Patented February 16, i904.
PATENT OEEIcE.
DANIEL T. FOLEY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WM. McNIEOE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TRUSS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 752,445, dated February 16, 1904.
Application filed August 5,1903.
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL T. FOLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trusses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of a truss for hernia or rupture in which the pressure of the pad may be adjusted in a simple and convenient manner, the means employed beinghereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof pointed out in the claim.
Figures 1 and 3 represent perspective views of portions of a truss embodying myinvention. Fig. 2 represents a section on line 02 m, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of a detached portion.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts "in the figures.
Referring to the drawings, Adesignates the,
I body-spring of a truss, and B designates a pad connected with the end thereof. Projecting from and firmly secured to said spring are the screw O and T-headed stud D, said screw being adjacent to said pad and said stud being removed a certain distance therefrom.
E designates an auxiliary spring, which is composed of a bar or plate of resilient material, the same having at opposite ends the slots Gr and N, which are adapted to receive, respectively, the screw O and T-headed stud D, it being noticed that the slot Gr may be passed over the flat or angular head of said stud, and then by a quarter-turn of the spring E the shankof said stud occupies said slot G, while the upper and lower walls of the latter are between said head, thus connecting the adjacent end of the spring E with the spring A. Then the said spring E is pressed toward or against said spring A and the slot F caused to receive the screw 0, after which a nut H is applied to said screw and tightened against the spring E, whereby the end of the latter next to the pad is connected with the spring A, the spring E thus being retained in posi- Serial No. 168,274. (No model.)
tion on the truss as such in the direction of the length of the latter, both practically as one, it being seen that there is now a duplication of springs, whereby the spring A proper is stiffened and made less resilient in action, and so exerts a greater pressure on the pad and consequently on the place of rupture. Owing to the slots F G, the spring E may have a certain play on the latter during the bending of both springs, thus preventing binding of the same one on the other. Should further pressure. be desired, another spring, such as E, may be applied and secured similar to to the latter.
.When normal pressure is desired, the spring E may be removed by unscrewing the nut H, withdrawing the spring from the screw C, and then turning said spring so that the slot Gr thereof registers with the flat or narrow head of the stud D, when the spring may be slipped from the latter. This leaves the spring A bare of the spring E, as in Fig. 3, the effect of which is evident.v
It will be seen that as occasion arises the wearer of the truss may increase the pressure of the pad or decrease the same, either at the desired place, without necessarily having the services of an expert attendant, providing a plurality of trusses of different degrees of pressure, or disturbing the primary resiliency of the spring A.
The use of the stud D as a form of retainer for the adjacent end of the spring E is pre ferred, as it aifords a convenient means for attaching said end to the spring E and admits of the employment of a single screw and nut for preventing separation of the outer spring.
Various changes maybe made in the details of construction shown without departing from the general spirit of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in each case to the same.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A truss comprising a body-spring, a pad sespring and have limited longitudinal movement.
DANIEL 'r. FOLEY.
