10 ALL WHOM IT MAI-CONCERN:
Be it known that I, Jomt Room, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven, and State of. Connecticut; have 'inrenteda new Improvement in Bolt-Heading Maehines QandI'do hereby declare the following, when taken in canteen with the accernpany'ing drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full,- clear, and exactdescription of the smile, and which said drawings cens'titutepart hf this snecifieation, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a side view, Figure 2a rep View, and in vFigures 8 and 4 detached views. I I
This invention relates to im improvementin the machine int-heading bolts, for which Letters Patent were granted to me, dated October 29,1867, and consists, first, in the man'ner of operating'zthe jaws or dies, and,
second,-'in adjusting the crowner duringjts operation. I v
In-ordento the clear underst'anding of my invention, as well as toenahle others. to construct the same, I :willproceed to a description thereof, as illustrated inthejaccompanyingdrawin gs. y A is the. bed-Plate; upon its upper sui'face are arranged thefour dies q'attached' to slides 15, and operated throngh lever c by, means of .a cylinder, B, as seen in fig. 1. The cylinder is urranged'to move vertically by rneans of a cam orcrank, G ,.on the shaft-D, so that, by thepreirolutjion off t'he saidcfrank or cam, the cylinder B Inches up and down, being arranged in suitable guides'to rete'in'it in its properyertjcalpbsition. Upon the said cylinder B; and corresponding to the lever c, nrojecti'qns'f ate formed,"so that the dowuwardpaovement bf the" oa in foi'oe s. thelower end ot thelevers a' outwarij ns'denoted inred,- and'a'.g roove or red, corresponding to the hid hrejeetions,.azid'attached to the lower end ofthe levers rc', ser.ves 'to dfaw in the lower end of the said levers whenthe eaid cam is raised, as denoted in'fig. 1; Theforcing out of the lower. end of the levers closes the diesel," and vs'cc'versa; thus a. positive rnov ement is given to thefsn id dies, and may be adjusted by raising or lowering the-cam. I Otherwise thisipart of the machine is constructed the same as in my patent before referred to. E, the crowner ordie fo'r finishing the'top of the h'ead ofthebolh-is nrranged npon a. vertical slide, F, cperated hyaearn, G, on theshaft 1), through a-l'ever, H, .whichhas. its fulcrum at i'in an adjustable block, I, so'that,-' by the operation of the cam G, the die or crowner is foi;ced down-hard n'ponthe top of. the -bolt-bend. As it is advisable to give two orm'ore blows to the top of the heajd -the second depressing more than the first as also to ydjustthe cro'wner to a different thicknessoflhend, I miike the block I, adjhstahle, so that, by raising or lowering vthe said block I, the crewner is carriedi ar-ther from or hroug'ht'nearer tditheibolt head, and this I do by hanging sthe saidblock I neon an eccdntri mL, as seen iniig. 3, s'oth'at, by turning the eccentric, L, bym ea ns of the lever M, as fromthe positionin fig. 3 to that in fig. 4, the crowner will be thrown down to its lowest point, and this 'inay be done .d'uring thc operation of the niachine, so that, whatevermnybe the quantity ofi'inetal within the dies, the head n' myi he perfectly finished by the oper tion ofthe adjusting-downer so tordo; or the eccentric he set at a given point and force the head to the thickness allowed by such "adjustment. 3 Having thus fully described my'invention, what I claim-as new end useful, and desire to secure by Letters 1. The arrangement of the dylindor B, with its projeetionsf, the levers c, 'and die-holders b, so as to force up and" withdraw th said die-holders, in the manner substantially'ns described.
2. The combination of the slide F, fnlcrlirn-pim z, block I, and e'ccentiic', L, with the lever H, alias-herein, described 'and for "the purpose set forth.
