HAT PIN AND ATTACHMENT.

UNITED STATES Patented February 9, 1904,
PATENT OFFICE.
HAT-PIN AND ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 751,771, dated February 9, 1904.
Application filed March 6, 1902. Serial No. 96,914. (No model.)
T0 (11 whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FLORENCE AsHToN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Washington, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Hat-Pins and Attachments for Ladies Hats, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in hat-fasteners, and relates more particularly to means for fastening ladies hats.
The present invention has for its object to provide a device of the above-described character that will be extremely simple in construction, strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive to manufacture, and highly elficient in its use.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the under side of the hat having my improvements attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the fastening means adapted to be secured in the interior of the hat to receive the hat-pin. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the crimped or corrugated hat-pin.
In the drawing the reference-numeral 1 represents the crown of the hat, 2 the rim thereof, and 3 the interior band. To the latter is attached a perforated plate 4, which is bulged outwardly, as shown at 5, said perforated plate carrying apertured lugs 6 6 on each side thereof and lugs 7 7 on its lower side. These apertured lugs and plate 8 are adapted to receive suitable fastening means to secure the said plate to the inner face of the inner band 3. A crimped or corrugated hatpin 9 carries the piercing-point 10 upon its one end and upon its opposite end the head 11.
The operation of my improved hat-fastener is as follows: The pin is pierced through the side of the hat, through the hair of the wearer, into one of the perforations of the plate. As it is forced inward through the plate it is given several turns, so as to permit one or more of the crimps of the pin to pass through the plate and lie in the rear thereof, which will securely fasten the hat-pin within the perforated plate. By this construction after the pin has been inserted in position the straight portions 9 and 10 of the pin project through the crown of the hat at diametrically opposite points, the portion 9 in front of and the portion 10 in the rear of the plate 5. In order to remove the pin, the same is turned in the opposite direction, and simultaneously the pin is withdrawn from its engagement and it may be easily removed, as will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.
It will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the hat, a plate having an outwardly-bulged apertured portion, integral end lugs 6, 6, carried by said plate, a pair of apertured lugs formed integral with the lower edge of said plate, and an elongated lug 8, formed integral with the upper edge of said plate,'a pin extending through said hat and plate and having the portion thereof lying within said hat crimped, said crimped portion extending through the bulged portion of said plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
FLORENCE ASHTON.
Witnessesz O. M. RUPLE, JOHN W. ASHTON.
