SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 751,143, dated February 2, 1904.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL T. BRANNOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at North view, in the county of Webster and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stovepipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to stovepipes; and it has for its object to provide apipe which will permit of ventilation of a room in which the pipe is used by allowing impurities to pass into the pipe, a further object of the invention being to provide a construction embodying a cup or basin disposed to catch any particles of solid matter that may fall from the pipe through the ventilating-openings.

In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in both views, Figure 1 is an elevation showing a portion of a stovepipe embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the stovepipe.

Referring now to the drawings, the stovepipe may comprise any suitable number of sections, the lower end of one section, 5, of which is flared or bell-shaped, and in this flared or bell-shaped end is received the upper end of the next section, 6, therebelow, the sections .5 and 6 being rigidly connected by means of the irons 7, so that between these irons the upper end of the section 6 is spaced from the wall of the hell by interspaces.

In the use of the pipe described the air from the room passes upwardly through the bell, between it and the upper end of the section 6, and thence upwardly through the section 5.

To catch any soot or other matter that may drop from the bell-shaped lower end of the pipe-section 5, a cup or basin 8 of inverted frusto-conical shape is employed having its lower end portion 15 cylindrical and slit longitudinally. The portion 15 of the cup is slidably engaged with the pipe-section 6, and to clamp the cup in position upon the pipe-section 6 a clamping-bolt 9 is engaged through the perforated ears 10, disposed at opposite 5 sides of the slit of said cylindrical portion. By means of this clamping-bolt the cylindrical portion is directed upon the pipe-section 6. By sliding the cup 8 upon the pipe-section 6 the interspace between its upper edge and the lower edge of the bell of the section 5 may be varied to permit more or less of a draft from the room into the pipe, and when it is desired to cut off the ventilator entirely the cup may be slid upwardly until its upper edge engages in the groove 11 at the lower edge of the bell of the section 5.

It will be understood that in practice modifications of the specific construction shown may be made and that any suitable materials 5 and proportions may be used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention.

IVhat is claimed is- 1. A pipe comprising an upper section hav- 7 ing afiared lower end, a lower section disposed with its upper end in the flared end and spaced from the wall thereof, and a cup slidably mounted upon and encircling the lower section and having means for holding it at different distances from the flared end of the upper section.

2. A stovepipe comprising an upper section having a flared lower end having a groove at its lower edge, a lower section disposed with its 30 upper end in the flared end and spaced from the wall thereof, and a cup mounted upon and encircling the lower section, said cup being slidable on the lower section for movement of its upper edge into and out of engagement 5 with the groove of the flared end of the upper section and having means for holding the cup against sliding movement.
