Description

Y BASE, F01? 5/1 Pun/5's. 75076 Esau D. Taylor.
ESAU D. TAYLOR, OF HORNELLSVILLE, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 75,076, dated March 3, 1868.
BASE FOR BALL-PLAYERS.
vflit): Stlgehnle mantis initiate fishes 332mm ant taking out at its. same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: A
Be it known that I, ESAU'D. TAYLOR, of Hornellsville, in the county of Steuben, inthe State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Device for aBase, and the mode of attaching the same, and securing it in position for-baseball players; and the following is a fulhclear, and exact, description of the same, reference being had to the aocompanying drawings, making a part. of this specification, iu whiehf- Figure 1 represents a side viewof the stake, iron socket, and swivel-cap iron, withthe base attached. Figure 2 shows a flat view. of the swivel-cap, with the leather fastenings for the base, Figure 3 is a. sectional edge view of the swivel-cap iron. Figure 4 shows a section through the fastening-socket and stake, for driving into the ground.
. The object of my invention is to furnish cheap, eflicicnt, and durable bases for the national game of base. hall; and it consists in securing the sand-bhg to a swivel-cap iron, having a. central opening to fit on to a pin oaston a socket, to fit on the stake to be driven into the ground.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will describe it more fully, referring to the drawings, and to the letters markedthereon. i
I make the stake A of any durable wood, turned with a sharp point, a, so that it maybe driven into the ground, on the top of which is fitted a metal socket, B,-having a stem, b, in its ccntrepwith a lip .or projection,
' c, on the top, ,which passes through a notch or recess, e, made'for it in one side of the, h0le Ointhe cap D, so
thatwhen the cap is put on the projecting stem hand turned a little, the lip or projection cserves the purpose of a key, to hold it on; the swivel-cap D, being made of cast metal, having four or more slits or openings, (2 d d, in which straps of leather, ffff, may be put through, forming loops to securethe sand-bug, or cushion to the cap D. The bag or cushion E, which forms the base for base-ball player's, maybe made of leather, can. vas, or other suitable materiahand of any form or size to suitlthc purpose or fancy, and, when secured to the cap D, can easily be taken oil from the stem 6, and carried from the field to a placelof security, leaving the metal socket B and stake A in the ground, all ready for the next game tobc played.
The advantages to be derived from my invention, as will readily be seen, are, that t'he'bases, when located, and the stakes driven, will remain at fixed points, and not he moved about by the players as they reach them, in making their runs, and the cushion or sand-bag, being secured to the plate-cap so that they canturn on the centre, materially aid the player in resting on the base and watching the movements of they pitcher, and other movements of the game. v 7 Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The stake A,' pin-socket B, swivel-cap D, and cushion or sand-bag E, all in'fcombination, tobe used for the base ortbound's for base-hall players, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth. I
In testimony whereof, Ihereunto subscribe my. name in the presence of ESAU D. TAYLOR.
Witnesses:
