Description

`@with gtst-eis gamut @ffnet JACOB A. sHERMAgN, 0F NEW YORKQN. Y.
Letters Patent lVo. "15,061, dated March 3, V1868; antedated February 20, 1.868.
tuinierenl 'muss TQ ALL WHOM 'I'.i..MAYl CONCERN: l
Be lit knownthat I, J'Acon A.'SHERMAN,of, the city'and 'State of New York, 'have invented, made, and applied to use, a certain new and useful Improvementin Trusses for Hernia; and Ido hereby declare the following to be o full, clear,- and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, w-hereinf- Figure 1 is a plan of saidtrnss, in about thev position it occupies`when drawn around the' body, and' Figure 2 is;arenr elevatioh of the pad-plate, audits connection to the spring. Similar marksof reference denote the same parts. v :My-present invention is n. inovable spring, carrying at its end the pad, 1n combination with a metal bar, 'extending around' .the person, the `position and pressure of the pad depending upon the amount which said spring projects beyond the end ofthe v said metal bar'. I alsoy unite the two metal bars employed by an adjustable hinge, and apply a inovlable wedge between the lapping parts of such bars, to regulate their relativo position and pressure on the spring'that carries the padfand is applied between these bars und the person. I mount the pad on a hinged plate, that is constructed so as to be used on the right or left side of the person.
` In the drawing, i a-are metal bars that may be bent tothe person; b b are the pads, and c c their springs. Each springcpasscs through a doop, d, near the end of 'the spring a, and the other end of thepring c is attached to the screwsclip e,' by theadjiistng otl which the spring c and its `pad-b will be held in a more or less proiected position beyond the end of the bar a. The other ends of the liars a lap, andf'is a hinge at the end of one bar a, attached adjustably tothe other bar a, by the cling, and It is a wedge, fitted to be slidden end. wise, und hold the lapping," parts of the`bars a more or less apart, and thereby aid in adjusting the pressure of the hernial pad k. lis auspringhinged at the end z`t-o one of" the bars a, and fitted with a loop at thc'other end, around the other bar a, so that this end can slide as the spring is compressed, (see red lines, fig. 1.) Upon thisspring lis a plate, n, that is attached by screws, and isl provided with extra holes, as scenin fig. 2, so that this plate n can be placed to stand to the right or` to the left, and thus nccommodatethe position of the hernia. i
The plate nhas, at its end, the intermediate plate-m, that extends to the pad-plate o, and is'united by a hinge. By this construction, the truss-padcan be almost rotated upon ltheserew joining m and 1t, so that its hinged end, and the pressure applied thereto, can be brought into any desired position in relation to' the hernia,
.and the yielding character of the spring I gives an agreeable but firm pressure upon the parts. A screw might,
be applied Vto adjust the distance between the' lapping ends ot' the borsa. a, in place of the wedge.' The screw t passes through the pad-plate o, audits head rests against the plate 1i, in rdcr that the plate and padmay be sustained'inthe desredjndlined position to thespriug Z, thclhinge-platem allowing of this adjustment.
What I claim, and'desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v l 1. I claim uniting-the bars a a by a hinge, in. combination with mrudjustment applied between the lappingl ends of such' bars, substantially as and forv the purposes speciied. l y i 2. I clain. applying the spring that carries thehernialpad, between the bar a and the person, and fitting thesamo to slide, at one end, on the Ysaid bar a, substantially as set forth. o
3; I claim tno plates 1nV und it, attached together by a screw, und united, at the end of the platc'm, by a v hinge, to the truss-pad, and at the end of the plate it, to the spring Z, so as to regulate the position of the hernial pad,'as specified` l y 4. I claim the screw t, in 'combination wLtnthe pad-plate o, and plates 'm and n, as and for the purposes. specified.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature, this eighth day of February, D. 1867.
