To all whom, t may concern:

Beit known that I, ELOF LINDGREN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the boroug'h of Brooklyn, New York city, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Chair and Bedstead, of which the following' is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple combination of elemental parts in a` contrivance for adjustments either for an 0rdinary chair, reclining-chair, or a bedstead, as hereinafter described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a side elevation with a part in section, showing the chair adjustment. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the saine. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the bedstead adjustment. Fig'. 4 is a vertical section of the adjustment of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a transverse section on line l l of Fig. 6. Fig. 6 is a side elevation showing' a foot-rest attachment for use in connection with the chair.

a represents four posts; arm-rests connecting' two of the posts of each side, respectively, at the top; c, a board connecting the two back posts from the level of the seat s downward, said posts being of suitable height for carrying the arm -rests at the proper height above the seat. d indicates side boards connecting' said side posts, respectively, and d" a bottom board inclosing, together with said side and back boards, a space under the seat and constituting the main structure, comprising the liXedly-conneeted principal elements of the chair and forming the middle section of the bedstead, to which a back c is hinged at f, with curved hook-pawls g pivoted to it at /L and provided with a series of hooks z' to engage pins j, respectively in the back posts, for supporting the back more or less upright for reclining more or less.

The pins will preferably be covered with rubber or other suitable material for preventing noise. The pawls g have rigidly-attached lever-arms 7" for lifting and disconnecting them from the holding-pins ,7' whenthe chairback is to be adjusted downward.

Curved. sleeve-guards are provided for reception of the pawls r/ to protect and conceal the parts of said pawls projecting forward of the hind chair-posts when the back c is set upward and for braces to the back posts. These guards are attached to the hind posts and the side boards d, respectively.

The back e is provided with a headboard Z, hinged to it at fm., so that it can fold down Hush with the upper edges of the side bars of the back when used as a back to the chair, and said headboard is provided with jointed braces n to support it as a headboard, and supporting-legs o are hinged to the back and under side of the seat-back at ;u to support it when adjusted for a bed, and these also have jointed braces q. The seat part s of the chair is hinged to the board c at zi and has front supports u, attached to the sides (Z at a, and a front extension bed-support 'n is hinged to it at fw, so that by lifting' the seat on its hinges the extension 'u may be folded back into the space under the seat between the sides (Z.

A drawer for the bedclothes comprising sides a', back y, bottom s, and front 2 is arranged to slide into the space under seat s from the front. This drawer carries inside of the front 2 legs 3 for the support of the front of the drawer when drawn out for adl justing the bed. These legs are vertically adjustable in slideways 4, to be lifted up out of sightwhen the drawer is retired to avoid the appearance of a bedstead. They are secured in the uplifted position by adjustable pins 5 engaging' sockets 6 in the front 2, and when the legs are shifted downward for supporting the extended drawer the pins are shifted into sockets 7, as indicated in Fig. 1.

The part 8 in Fig. t indicates a part of the mattress to be used in a bed adjustment. It will in practice be made in separate sections suitable to be stored in the drawer a: when the chair adjustment is desired.

In Fig. 6 I represent a foot-rest applied to the front posts A for use when the chair adjustment is employed. It consists of one piece of board 9, hinged at 10 to projecting pieces 11 of the front posts A, and another piece of board 12, hinged to piece 9 at 13, so that when extended for use piece 9 is supported in an inclined position by piece 12,

resting at one end on the iioor, and when not in use may be folded up, as indicated in dotted lines 14, Fig. 6, and be secured by spring'- catches 15. l hen the drawer is pulled out i'or making the bed, said pieces 9 and 1Q may be swung up on hinges 10 for allowing the drawer to be pulled out and then be dropped into the drawer after the removal of the contents.

It will be seen that the substantial middle structure of my improved chair and bedstead is a special feature of advantage in such articles in that it carries the heaviest part of the occupant and sustains the greatest stresses, particularly of the shifting and turning about, thus greatly relieving the other sections which may not be as substantial, particularly the jointed connections of the sections.

/Vhat I claim as my invention is# In a combined chair and bedstead, the combination of a middle section comprising the chair, consisting of a rigid structure of four posts, back and side boards connecting said posts below the seatand inclosing a drawerspace with opening for the drawer at thc front of the seat, side arm-rests connecting the side posts at the top, sleeve-braces connecting the hind posts and said side boards intermediately of the side boards and the armrests and a seat part hinged to the hind posts; a head or back section consisting of the seatback hinged to the hind posts in proximity to the seat-hinge and provided with hookpawls pivoted to its edges for engaging studpinson the hind posts and working in said sleeve-braces, said back also provided with folding legs to support its extremity when adjusted for a bed; and a front extension consisting ot' a drawer adapted to slide in and out ot' the drawer-space under the seat and provided with legs to support it when eX- tended, said legs being vertically adjustable to conceal them when the parts are in the chair adjustment, and the front extension bed-support hinged to the front edge of the seat.
