BYRON A. BROOKS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO UNION TYPE- l/VRITER COMPANY, OF JERSEY CITY, NEWV JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
TENSION DEVICE FOR KEY-LEVERS OF TYPE-WRITERS- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,807, dated May 10, 1904.
Original application filed April 26, 1894, Serial No. 509,086. Divided and this application filed November 24, 1900. Serial No. 37,626. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BYRON A. BROOKS, a citi-.
zen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in
the county of Kings and State of New York,
, have invented a new and Improved Tension Device for Key-Levers of Type-Writers, of
which, the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement by which the tension upon the key-levers may be adjusted independently, and comprises mechanism which will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
I5 This application is a division of my application, Serial No. 509,086, filed April 26, 1894, now Patent No. 677,110, issued June 25, 1901.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,
2 in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective of my improvement, only one key-lever being shown; and Fig. 2 is a side elevation showing my improvement and its application to the key-levers.
This application is a division of my application for improvement in type-writers, filed April 26, 1894, Serial No. 509,086.
The object sought herein is to provide means by which the tension upon the key-levers may be independently adjusted. With this object I place a plate A beneath the key-levers and extending transversely thereof, said plate be ing notched to form. upon one side a series of parallel arms a, resembling somewhat the teeth of a comb. As many such arms are provided as there are key-levers, and each key-leverB is connected with its particular arm by elastic connection, as a spring C, which is the usual 4 spring used to secure the return of the keylever to its normal position after depression. The key-levees are pivoted upon any suitable support, as D.
While the arms a would ordinarily have a certain amount of spring, this is a mere incident, due to the elasticity of all materials, and is not especially design ed or desired. It is in tended that the material of which the plate A and the arms a are made be such that it may be readily bent and given a permanent set. 5 This is done when it is desired to adjust the tension upon any key-lever, the connected arm a being bent toward or from the key-lever as necessary to vary the tension.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a type-writing machine the combination with the key-levers and an elastic tension member for each lever, of indcpemlently-adj ustable supports for said tension members consisting of arms which may be bent and given a permanent set. i
2. In a type-writer the combination with the key-levers and elastic tension members inde- 5 pendently connected with each key-lever of supports for said tension members consisting of a plate notched to form a series of arms or teeth, capable of independent adjustment to which the elastic tension members are connect- 7 ed, a separate arm being provided for each tension member.
3. In a type-Writer the combination with a series of key-levers, of a series of springs acting at one end upon the key-levers to maintain them in their normal position, and independently-adjustable supports for the other ends of the springs, whereby their tension may be adjusted.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name 1 to this. specification in the presence of the two subscribing witnesses.
BYRON A. BROOKS.
