UNITED STATES Patented May 10, 1904-.
FLOYD LESTER WALDRON, OF OEYLON, OHIO.
BOX-FASTENER- SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,649, dated May 10, 1904.
Application filed December 26, 1903. Serial No. 186,557. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FLOYD LESTER WAL- DRON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ceylon, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Box-Fasteners, of which the following is a full and exact de scription, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in box-fasteners especially designed for use in stores and commission houses and for use in transporting eggs, fruit, &c., where it is necessary to hastily remove the upper section to display the contents of the box and to easily and conveniently replace the said upper section and to securely hold the same in place. Cleats are provided at the ends of the boxes for handling the same.
The invention is illustrated in the drawings, in which" Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of the box, showing the locking means. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the box, showing the fastener. Fig. 3 is an end View of the box with a modified form of locking means.
My invention consists of peculiar construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the box is preferably rectangular in form and may be of any suitable size and constructed of any material suitable for the purpose for which the box is to be used. It is composed of a cover or lid A and a receptacle B. This lower receptacle or section is provided with cleatsO upon the end walls thereof, which serve as a means for conveniently handling the box. The lower section is further provided with a recess in one wall at or near the top, which recess is preferably metalbound on the upper side, or may have a thin piece of metal securely fastened to the box, having a recess therein for receiving the fastening carried on the upper section and to be hereinafter described.
The lid or cover A is provided with downwardly-extended walls, one of the end walls being hinged at E to a cleat O of the section B, while the other end wall at the front of the lidlrests upon the front cleat O of the receptac e.
Within the front end wall of the lid A is a recess formed to receive a resilient or spring locking member I). This member 1) is composed of a single piece of metal of suitable form, in this case a wire strip, having two arms embedded or secured to the lid at the bottom of the recess therein. Directly opposite to each other upon each of the arms of member D are formed spring-coils d, which rest against the bottom of the recess in the lid and serve to force the locking member into engagement with the recess of the body of the box. Above these coils the arms of the memberD extend at an angle to the portions thereof embedded in the lid and are substantially in parallelism to a point near the top of the recess, where they are then bent forwardly in a straight line, forming a loop a", which loop at its front end is slightly bent downwardly to form means for grasping the same to easily remove the locking member from its engagement with the recess of the receptacle or box body.
In Fig. 3 there is illustrated a slightly-modified form of locking member, in which there are employed double spring-coils and a loop extending downwardly from the upper por tion of the inclined arms instead of projecting therefrom in a straight line, as in Figs. 1 and 2.
The operation of this device is at once apparent from the foregoing description and the drawings and is as follows: The lid is turned upon its hinge to bring the forward end wall of the box upon the cleat O, upon which the spring locking member 1) springs, into the recess of the lid until the loop is opposite the recess of the box-body, whereupon the force of the coils is such as to return the said member into the last-named recess to lock the lid upon the receptacle. By pulling the member D from the recess the box-] id is easily unlocked from the body, as clearly set out and understood from the foregoing description.
Many changes in detail may be introduced in the structure of the present device without in any Way departing from the spirit of my invention.
hat I desire to protect by Letters Patent, and What 1 claim, therefore, is-
In a box-fastener, the combination with a body having cleats formed exteriorly thereon and a recess in the outer face of the box, a metal plate covering the upper end thereof, said plate projecting outwardly to a line with the outer face of the box, a hinged lid having a depending slot provided with a cut-out portion, and a spring locking member having coils therein secured at the lower end of the cut-out portion of the lid, an inclined portion projecting inwardly and extending without the cut-out portions of the lid, a hooked portion formed upon the upper end of the locking FLOYD LESTER \VALDRON.
