PATENT OFFICE.
STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of l etters'Patent No. 759,519, dated May 10, 1904.
Application filed June 1, 1903. Serial No. 159,633. (No model) T0 m7] whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ancrue GERRY I-IorrnN- STEIN, a cltizen of the United Stit'fi6S,IGSlLl1I1g' at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented or dis covered certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers, of which improvements the following is a specification. 7
In an application, Serial N 0. 159,681, of even date herewith 1 have shown and described a construction of boiler wherein provision is made for end and intermediate waterwalls for the lire-boxes, said water-walls being connected to extensions of front and rear headers, the latter being connected to an equalizing box or boxes to insure uniform circulation.
The invention described herein has for its object certain improved features of construction whereby the employment of an equalizing-box is avoided.
The invention is hereinafter more fully described and. claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming-a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved boiler, a portion of the casing being removed. Fig. 2 is a sec tional elevation, and Fig. 3 is a rear elevation, of the same. a
The two systems of circulation characteristic of this type of boiler start from the lower rear headers 3, one passing along the crosstubes 11 to the lower front header 1, the tubes 5 and 6, the upper front headers 2, crosstubes 17 to the upper rear drum 16, whilethe other system passes from the lower rear headers 3 along the two connected series of tubes 7 and 8 and the upper rear header t to the drum 16, which is connected by a series of downtakes 20 to the lower ends of the lower rear headers. The outer front and rear lower headers are extended down at least to the level of the grate-bars. These extensions are connected by means of two series of pipes 36, so secured in the extensions of the headers as to form practically closed walls at the sides of the fire-box. The rear headers should extend, preferably, below the level of the fire-grate, so that the tubes 36 will incline upwardly toward the front of the boiler. The intermediate lower rear headers have the lower ends supported by a channel-bar 14c, having its ends secured to the end headers and, if desired, supported at intermediate points by suitable posts or pillars 41. y
In order to equalize the circulation, the lower rear headers are connected together at or near their lower ends by suitable nipples 37. This construction also permits blowing off the boiler from the lower ends of the extended rear headers. In order to avoid any reduction of the width of lire-box and to bring the tubes 36 at right angles to the front of the boiler, it'is preferred to slightly curve diag-- onally opposite outer front and rear headers, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, so that their lower ends will be offset outwardly from the upper portions, compensating for the necessary olfsetting of the lower front and rear headers, as described in application Serial No. 159,681.
.It will be understood by those skilled in the art that the equalization of the circulation by connecting the rear headers by nipples may be applied to other constructions than that shown and described hereinas, for example, in the form of boiler shown in application Serial No. 159,681 the rear headers may be ni ppled together in lieu of being connected to a common equalizing box or boxes.
I claim herein as my invention 1. In a water-tube boiler, the combination of two series of front headers, two connected series of tubes extending in diverging lines from the rear of the boiler to the front headers, two series of rear headers,,the lower series of rear headers being nippled together, two connected series of tubesextending in diverging lines from the front of the boiler to the rear headers, tubes connecting the front and rear lower headers, and return connections from the upper to the lower headers, substantially as set forth.
2. In a water-tube boiler, the combination of two series of front headers, the end headers of the lower series having downwardextensions, two connected series of tubes extending in diverging lines from the rear of the boiler to the front headers, two series of rear headers, the lower series of headers beingnippled together, the end headers of the lower series having downward extensions, two connected series of tubes extending in diverging lines from the front of the boiler to the rear headers, tubes connecting the lower front and rear series of headers, tubes connecting the extensions of the front and rear headers forming water-Walls for the fire-box, and return connections from the upper to the lower headers, substantially as set forth.
3. In a Water-tube boiler, the combination of two series of front headers, the end headers of the lower series having downward extensions, two connected series of tubes extending in diverging lines from the rear-of the boiler to the front headers, two series of rear headers, the lower series of headers being nippled together, the end headers of the lower series having downward extensions, a beam tially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
ARCHIE G. HOHENSTEIN.
