Description

CLAYTON & BAILY.
Gas Lamp.
No. 7,594. Patented Aug. 27, 1850.
UNITE El STATES PATET CFFTCE.
SHARPLESS CLAYTON AND YARNALL BAILY, OF WEST CHESTER. PENNSYLVANIA.
SELF-GENERATING GAS-LAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 7,594, dated August 27, 1850.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, SI-IARPLESS CLAYTON and YARNALL BAILY, of the borough of Vest Chester, county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Lamps for Burning Fluid; and the following is a full and clear and exact description of the principle or character which distinguishes it from all other lamps known and of the manner of making, constructing, and using the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The nature of our invention consists in forming a beautiful gas light from fluid, by extending the wick through the common fluid lamp tube into a spheroid or other shaped ball or cavity, in which it is coiled, giving an opportunity of generating gas by means of two or three small jets, D, D, D, as represented in Figure 1, from small apertures or holes, underneath the ball, which are lit in the usual way by means of heat. The gas escapes through a small ball or burner on the top, with a slit or other opening in it.
The construction is as follows: A represents the tube; B, the ball or cavity into which the wick is extended and coiled; C, the burner; and D, D, D, the jets. Fig. 2, represents a view of the tube and burner detached. Fig. 3, represents a section of the same.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is The extension of the wick into a ball or cavity where the gas may be generated by means of jets as above set forth.
SHARPLESS CLAYTON. YARNALL BAILY.
