SPECIFICATXON forming part of Letters Patent No. 759,105, dated May 3, 1904. Application filed October 28, 1903. Serial No. 178,855x (No model.)
Be it known that l, FnANcrs M. H nrr'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at .Redoaln in the county of Montgomery and State of Iowa, have invented new and useful AImprovements in Railway-Ties, of which the follow ing is a specification.
My invention relates to new anduseful improvements in railway-ties; and its object is to provide a simple and durable device of this lcharacter adapted to be used as a substitute for the ordinary wooden tie.
The invention consists in providing a metallic body portion having parallel longitudinally-extending grooves in the upper face thereof adapted to be lilled with cement or other similar materiahand arranged within the grooves at the ends of the tie are blocks ol wood or other suitable librous material,which are adapted to be located under the rails of the track and to receive the securing means employed for fastening the rails in position.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts liereina'lter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
ln the accompanying' drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a tie constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the fastening devices which may be employed in connection with the tie.
Referring' to the figures by numerals of reference, l is a metallic body having' similar parallel dovetail grooves 2 in the upper face thereof, and seated within these grooves at the ends thereof are blocks 3, of wood or other suitable material. The walls of the grooves prevent the blocks from being raised from their positions, and said blocks are kept spaced apart by cement 4 or other suitable material arranged within the grooves and between the blocks. The blocks are adapted to be rendered waterproof in any suitable manner, and the rail-fastening means are placed thereon and forced thereinto. If desired, the ordinary spikes may be driven into the blocks for securing the rails thereto; but I preferably employ securingplates 5, such as shown in Fig'. 4, and each of which is formed of a base 6 and a raised engaging end 7, adapted to overlap the base-flange of the rail. The base-plates are secured in position by spikes or other suitable fasteningmeans. It will be seen that a tie constructed in accordance with my invention is extremely simple, durable, and inexpensive and will securely fasten rails in position.
ln the foregoing description l have shown the preferred form of my invention; but l do not limit myself thereto, as l am aware that modilioations maybe made therein without deintrting from the spiritorsacrilicingany of the ad vantagcs thereof, and lv therefore reserve the right to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described. the invention, what claimed as new isl. A railway-tie com prisi ng a metallic body having a longitudinallyextemling groove in the upper face thereof, blocks seated within the groove, and cement within the groove and interposed between the blocks.
2. A railway-tie comprising' a metallic body having a longitudinally extending dovetail groove therein, blocks litted within the groove at the ends thereof, and cement in said groove and between the blocks.
3. A. railway-tie comprising a metallic body having ,parallel longitudinally extending dovetail grooves therein, blocks seated within the ends of the grooves and adapted to receive rail-securing means, and cement within the grooves and between the blocks.
