To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL WASMUTH, a citizen of the Empire of Germany, residing at Griinhof, Stettin, in the Empire of Germany, have invented a new and useful Type-Writer, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to typewriters in which a frame carrying the carriage with the platen is raised through a certain distance on depressing a shift-key and through double this distance on depressing another shift-key. A type-writer of this kind is described in my United States Patent No. 7 36,324, of August 11, 1903, the frame carrying the carriage and platen in this type-writer being also capable of being raised through two different distances. The mechanism described in this patent presents, however, the disadvantage that on depressing'the shift-key lever 3 for raising the frame, with the carriage and the platen,
through the single distance a shock is produced by the nose of the frame 11 striking against the locking-lever 10, which shock is transmitted to the finger depressing the shift-key and is unpleasant to the operator. Moreover, this shock causes the frame, with the carriage and platen, to prematurely drop, so that on depressing the next following typekey the respective type would give an impression beneath the line, more particularly when writing quickly.
My invention relates to improvements in such type-writers whereby the kick on the finger is avoided and the alinement of the letters or signs written on the paper is insured; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to provide one or two vertical locking-levers hinged to supports on the machine-frame and arranged to normally permit the frame to move vertically and to lock the same when the respective shift-key'is depressed and, second, to make the one or two supportson the machine-frame adjustable. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in a mode of execution in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical cross-section through a type-writer on the line A B in Fig. 2, in which only the parts to be referred to are shown;
and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the same on the line C D in Fig. 1.

The horizontal shaft '5 is mounted to turn in the machine-frame 1, and on this shaft are fastened two levers 6 6 on the rear side (in Fig. 1 on the left) and the one shift-key lever 2 on the front side. vers 6 6 carry two pins 4': 4:, on whichthe two rollers 15 15 are mounted to turn. These rollers bear against the bottom parts 22 22 of two frames 11 1l,adapted to move vertically on the guides 7 7 by means of balls 16 16. The two frames 11 11 are assumed to be connected at the top by a guide 8, on which the carriage 12, carrying the platen 13, is arranged to slide longitudinally in any known manner. (Not shown.)
The bottom parts 22 22 of the frames are each provided with a rectangular hole 21, and beneath these holes two supports 18 18 are secured in the machine-frame and made adjustable by means of nuts 19 19. Hingedto these supports 18 18 are two vertical lockinglevers 1O 10, which in their normal positions freely move through the holes 21 21 without interfering withthe frames 11 11. A second shift-key lever 3, similar in shape to the first shift-key lever 2 when looked at from the side in Fig. 1, is mounted to turn on the one (left) end of the shaft 5. It has a short arm 24, which is pivotally connected with the one (left) locking-lever 10 by means of a doublybent rod 20. The other (right) locking-lever 10 is pivotally connected by a similar rod with a short lever 23, which is mounted to turn on the shaft 5 and resembles the arm 24:. Both the arm 24 and the lever 23 are rigidly connected by a flat rod 25. On depressing the other shift-key lever 3 it will take along with it the first shift-key lever 2 by means of the bent arm 9 and also raise the carriage with the platen. At the same time the shift-key lever 3 will by the rods 20 move the two locking-levers 1O forward (in Fig. 1 to the right) so that the noses 17 17 of the latter will move over the bottom parts 22 and soon stop them, which means that the carriage 12, with the platen 13, is now raised only through the single lift. Obviously the forces transmitted from the rollers 15 15 on the two levers 6 6 to the bottom parts 22 22 of the frames 11 11 are taken up by the noses 17 17 of the locking-levers 1O 10, and thereby by the machine-frame 1 and not by the finger depressing the shift-key lever 3, as in the machine according to the patent referred to above. Further, it is a decided advantage that the locking-levers 10 10 can be adjusted nicely by means of the adjusting-nuts 19 19, whereby the alinement of the letters or signs written is insured.
The mechanism described so far can be varied in its details without deviating from the spirit of my invention.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a type-writer, the combination with a frame for supporting the carriage and the platen, of means for guiding said frame vertically, a vertical locking-lever mounted on the machine-frame to turn, said frame having a part over which said vertical locking-lever can engage, a horizontal shaft mounted in the machine-frame to turn, two levers fastened on said horizontal shaft on the rear side and adapted to raise said frame, a first shift-key lever fastened on said horizontal shaft on the front side, a second shift-key lever loose on said horizontal shaft near said first shift-key lever and arranged for taking along with it the latter on being depressed and havinga short arm, and a rod pivotally connecting said lockinglever with the short arm of said second shiftkey lever.
2. In a type-writer, the combination with a frame for supporting the carriage and the platen, of means for guiding said frame vertically, two vertical locking-levers mounted ing two parts over which said two vertical locking-levers can engage, a horizontal shaft mounted in the machine-frame to turn, two levers fastened on said horizontal shaft on the rear side and adapted to raise said frame, a first shift-key lever fastened on said horizontal shaft on one end on the front, a second shift-key lever loose on said horizontal shaft near said first shift-key lever and arranged for taking along with it the latter on being depressed and having a short arm, a rod pivotally connecting the one of said two vertical locking-levers-with the short arm of said second shift-key lever, a short lever loose on the other end of said horizontal shaft, a part rigidly connecting said short lever with the short arm of said second shift-key lever, and a rod pivotally connecting the other of said two locking-levers with said short lever.
3. In a type-writer, the combination with a frame for supporting the carriage and the platen, of means for guiding said frame vertically, two vertical supports secured in the machine-frame and adjustable longitudinally, two vertical locking-levers mounted to turn on said two vertical supports, said frame having two parts over which said two vertical locking-levers can engage, a horizontal shaft mounted in the machine-frame to turn, two levers fastened on said horizontal shaft on the rear side and adapted to raise said frame,,a first shift-key lever fastened on said horizontal shaft on one end on the front. a second shift-key lever loose on said horizontal shaft near said first shift-key lever and arranged for taking along with it the latter on being depressed and havinga short arm, a rod pivotally connecting the one of said two vertical locking-levers with the short'arm of, said second shift-key lever, a short lever loose on the other end of said horizontal shaft, a part rigidly connecting said short lever with the short arm of said second shift-key lever, and a rod pivotally connecting the other of said two locking-levers with said short lever.
