STEAM-GENERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 758,505, dated April 26, 1904.
Application filed August 3, 1903.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EMIL A. BRINER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Steam-Generators, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain improvements in steam-boilers; and it more particularly consists of an improved form of the boiler described and claimed in Patent No. 718,815, granted to me January 20, 1903.
The object of the present invention is to provide a boiler which, while possessing all. of the advantageous features inherent in the construction covered by the above-mentioned patent, shall be more eflicient and reliable in operation, while being simple to assemble and easy to keep in repair. This object I attain as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved steam-generator, taken through the steam-drum and the two headers, showing the detail construction of the same. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of a portion of my improved boiler, showing one arrangement of the rear header. Fig. 3 is a detached elevation of one face of one of the rear groups of headers and portions of two other groups of the same. Fig. 4is asectional elevation taken on the line 4 4, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a sectional elevation taken on the line 5 5, Fig. 1; and Fig. 6 is an elevation similar to Fig. 4, showing my improved construction of diaphragm arranged as described in my patent above referred to.
In the above drawings, A is the steam-drum of my improved boiler, supported in the usual way above the outside of the boiler-casing proper, B, and having connected to its lower portion a flat vertically-placed header 0, having free communication with its interior. The steam-drum and said header are placed in the front of the boiler, there being in the rear a second header or series of headers D, the original form of this construction being shown in Fig. 1 and the improved arrangement thereof being illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3.
Extending between the front and rear headers C and D are a number of water-tubes 0 Serial No- 168,0Z5. (No model.)
and d, these two being grouped in a number of vertical series alternating with each other, as shown in Fig. 4, those of the series 0 extending forwardly and upwardly from the header D to the header C and those of the series cl extending rearwardly and upwardly from the header C to the header D. The rear header or series of headers consists, as in Figs. 2 and 3, of a number of units D, placed one upon the other and havingsuitable openings for the reception of the tubes 0 and d, the tubes 0 entering the openings 0, while the tubes CZ enter the openings d. By this arrangement all of the tubes 0, whose rear ends lie in the same horizontal plane, enter the same header D, as doalso all of the tubes d, whose rear ends similarly lie in the same horizontal plane.
As shown in Fig. 4, a diaphragm E extends between the front and rear surfaces of the header 0 and divides it into upper and lower chambers, the arrangement of parts being such that all of the tubes 0 enter the chamber formed in or opening into the upper portion of the header, while all of those cl have their forward ends in communication with the chamber formed in the lower portion of the header. This diaphragm in the case illustrated is formed of two or more sheets of material bent into U shape and so placed that each sheet or plate has a portion parallel with a similar portion of an adjacent sheet and substantially perpendicular to the front and rear face of the header C, the composite diaphragm thus being bent or corrugated, so as to extend between the holes in said header for the tubes 0 and d in such a way as to form the two chambers noted above. The diaphragm itself may be made or built up in any of a number of ways, particularly since it is not subjected to stress, being so placed that the pressures on its two sides are balanced; If desired, it may consist of cast or forged steel, cast-iron, &c., or its plane portions may consist of malleable iron with pieces of curved steel plate riveted to them for the bends or turns.
As shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the tubes 0 and d are divided into a number of groups, in the present instance three, each group having its own set of rear headers D and entering a portion of the front header (J, separated from the remainder thereof by means of a vertically-placed partition 0 thus forming three chambers in said front header, said vertical partition 0 serving to separate the circulating water in one group of tubes from that in the group of tubes next to it.
Stay-bolts 0 are required to properly support the front and rear faces of the header C, and, as shown in Fig. 4:, both the diaphragm E and the partition 0 are extended around the stay-bolts, so as to materially aid in stiffening the surfaces requiring support. This partition 0 is formed, like the diaphragm E in the case illustrated, of a pair of parallel plates properly bent or curved in the vicinity of the stay-bolts, so as to fit snugly around them, it being understood that, as in the case of the diaphragm E, the partition may be of cast-iron, having cored portions for the staybolts, or may consist of steel or iron and steel, as above pointed out.
Stay-plates (I, having suitably-formed anglepieces attached to their ends, are extended across the lower portion of the steam-drum A and serve to hold together and properly support and strengthen the otherwise weakened section thereof at the point where it is cut away for its junction with the front header C.
In order to provide for the proper circulation of the water in the boiler, I connect the lower front portion of the steam-drum A with the lower part of the vertical header C by means of any desired number of down-comer pipes F external of the boiler-casing, or, as in Fig. at, by down-comer channels :17, since no external down-comer pipe is needed here.
At the sides of the boiler, immediately underneath and substantially parallel with the lowest of the tubes 0, are relatively large pipes G, having their forward ends connected to the front header C, as shown in Fig. 4:, and provided with a series of vertical tubes extending between them and a pair of horizontally-placed pipes Gr extending to one side of and at the same level as the grate H.
It will be understood that both the headers, the drum, and the tubes are supported in any desired manner by means of the framework 1; but this is not described in detail, as it forms no part of the present invention.
In order that the products of combustion arising from the fuel on the grate H may most efliciently impart their heat to the water in the tubes and hcaders,I preferably place upon the lowest of the tubes (Z, which lie immediately over the furnace, a ceiling of fire-brick 71, as shown in Fig. 5, making an opening at one side of the furnace for the passage of the manner that the products of combustion passing from the furnace are compelled to rise between the tubes of two of said groups and then to move horizontally toward and among the tubes of another one of the groups, said gases being then caused to move downwardly toward and around the tubes of a third group by means of a second bafile-wall, formed of a framework 71 having a face of fire-brick W, from whence the gases escape from the top of the boiler-casing to the stack.
As shown in Fig. 5, the casing B of the boiler is faced with fire-brick 7), held in place by bolts.
As in the case of my prior patent, I preferably form openings in the headers C and D, normally closed by suitable covers, by means of which access may be had to the tubes 0 and d for the purposes of cleaning and repair.
I claim as my invention" 1. The combination in a steam-generator, of a header, circulating-tubes entering the same, stays supporting portions of said header, and a diaphragm dividing the header into chambers and having portions placed adjacent to and extending around the stays, substantially as described.
2. The combination in asteam-generator, of a header, a series of stay bolts extending between portions of said header and a diaphragm or diaphragms extending between opposite faces of the header, said diaphragm having through it openings for the passage of the stay-bolts, substantially as described.
3. The combination inasteam-generator, of a header, a series of stay-bolts extending between portions of said header, and a diaphragm or diaphragms extending between opposite faces of the header, said diaphragm or diaphragms lying in a plane or series of planes substantially parallel to the length of the staybolts, and having through them openings for the passage of the stay-bolts, substantiallyas described.
4. The combination in a steam-generator of a header, circulating-tubes entering the same, stays extending between and supporting opposite portions of the header, with a diaphragm formed of a series of plates, each of which has a portion parallel with the plate adjacent thereto, said parallel portions inclosing and being curved around certain of the stays, substantially as described.
5. The combination in asteam-generator, of a header, and a diaphragm extending between opposite faces thereof said diaphragm being formed of aseries of plates of which each has a portion parallel to a portion of the plate adjacent thereto, substantially as described.
6. The combination in asteam-generator, of a steam-drum, a header connected thereto, a number of groups of circulating-tubes connected to said headers, said groups being formed of a number of series of tubes, partitions in the header separating the openings of one group of the tubes from those of another, and diaphragms separating the openings of the tubes of one series from those of another, substantially as described.
7. The combination in a steam-generator, of a steam-drum, a header connected thereto having a number of groups of water-tubes entering it, each of said groups being composed of a number of series of tubes, partitions in the header separating one group of tubes from another, a partition dividing the header into upper and lower chambers in such a manner that certain of the series of tubes are in connection with one of the chambers and those of another series are in connection with the other chamber, substantially as described.
8. The combination in asteam-generator of a number of series of tubes divided into a plurality of groups, a furnace, and substantially vertical baffle-walls extending between said series of tubes, the combustion-chamber of said furnace having a substantially horizontal partition between it and the tubes the; same being provided with an opening at one side thereof, said baifie-walls and the partition being arranged relatively to one another so that the products of combustion will escape from one side of the furnace to the tubes and will be directed transversely over thetop of said furnace to the opposite side thereof, substantially as described.
9. The combination in astearn-generttor, of a front header, a series of rear headers placed one above the other, with water-tubes connecting said headers, certain of said tubes having their rear ends connected in the same horizontal plane to a single header, and their other ends connected to the front header in a different plane, substantially as described.
12. The combination in a steam-generator of a steam-drum, a header connected thereto, a number of groups of circulating-tubes connected to said header and all opening substantially in the same plane, said groups being each formed of a number of series of tubes, a partition in the header separating the openings of one group of tubes from those of another group and serving to produce independent, circulation from the steam-drum through each group, substantially as described.
13. The combination in a steam-generator of a steam-drum, a header connected thereto,
a series of horizontally-placed rear headers arranged one above the other, water-tubes from each of said rear headers to the front header, certain of said water-tubes being inclined upwardly, the others being inclined downwardly from their respective rear headers, with a partition or partitions in the front header placed to separate the spaces entered by the downwardly-inclined tubes from those entered by the upwardly-inclined tubes, substantially asdescribed.
