GAS-BURNER FOR FURNACES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 758,420, dated April 26, 1904 Application fi1edMay9.l903. Serial No. 156,425. (Nomedeh) To all whom it may concern:
invented a new and useful Gas-Burner for Fur naces, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a partial longitudinal section of a glass-leer provided with my improved burner system. Fig. 2 is a face view of the burner. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 4. is a partial vertical cross-section of the furnace. Figs. 5 and 6 are partial vertical cross-sections showing different connections of the air-supply, and Fig. 7 shows a modified form of the air connection.
My invention relates to the burning of gas, especially producer-gas, in furnaces, such as leers, heating and annealing furnaces, &c. Its object is to obtain better combustion of the gas than has hitherto been possible, especially with producer-gas.
In the drawings, referring to Figs. 1 to 4, inclusive, 2 represents a gas-main leading from a gas-producer, and 3 a valve therein. This valve controls the gas flowing to the portAc, leading into a chamber 5 below the floor of a leer 6. The walls of the leer on'each side contain vertical gas-flues 7, which lead from the chamber 5 to the horizontal burners 8, projecting into the sides of the leer-chamber. The connection of the gas-flue to the burner is shown in Fig.4, the burner having a central gas-chamber 9, which is of general funnel shape and tapers inwardly to the narrow elongated slot or outlet-port 10. Around this gas-chamber is provided the air-chamber 11, which in the form shown entirely surrounds the gas-chamber and has an outlet-port 12, surrounding the gas-outlet, as shown in Fig. 2. Air is forced into the air-chamber of the burner by a compressor or blower through a valved pipe 13 and branches 14, which in this form are connected to the inner ends of the air-chambers. It will be noted that the burners are built into the wall of the furnacechamber and extend from the vertical flues In using the burners the gas-valve is opened and air is forced into the surrounding airchambers of the burners. The air thus issues from the burner in a hollow sheet surrounding the sheet of gas, and good combustion is thus obtained. The air also serves to draw or suck in the gas, especially where it is not under pressure, as in producer-gas. In Fig. 5 the air-main 13 extends outside the side wall, and the branch 14: extends through the side Wall and into the bottom of the airchamber.
In Fig. 6 the air-main l3 extends along the roof and the branch 14* connects into the top of the air-chamber. In Fig. 7 I show a slightly-different form of burner, wherein the air-chamber is provided with a bottom extension 15, into which the air branchis connected.
The advantages of my invention result from the great economy and perfect combustion obtained. The arrangement of the lines and the shape of the burner may be changed and many other variations may be made in the form and arrangement without departure from my Invention.
. I claim 1. A combustion -chamber having a gasburner opening into it, said burner having a gas-chamber with an elongated opening, a separate air-chamber having a slotted outlet opening into the combustion-chamber substantially parallel with the gas-outlet, and a pipe leading from a source of air under pressure to the air-chamber; substantially as described.
2. A combustion-chamber having a gasburner opening into it, said burner having a gas-chamber with an elongated opening,
a separate air-chamber at least partially surand a pipe leading from a source of air under pressure to the air-chamber; substantially as described.
3. A combustion chamber having a gasburner opening into it, said burner having a central gas-chamber with an outlet, a separate air-box having a slotted opening surrounding said outlet and opening into the combustion-chamber and a pipe connecting a source of air under pressure to said air-box; substantially as described.
4. A combustion-chamber having a gasburner opening into it, said burner having a central gas-chamber with an outlet, a separate air box or chamber surrounding the gaschamber and having a slotted opening surrounding said outlet and opening into the combustion-chamber and a pipe connecting a source of air under pressure to said air-box; substantially as described.
5. A furnace having a gas-flue in its wall and connected to an inwardly-projecting gasburner having an elongated slot, an air-chamber having a separate outlet at least partially surrounding the gas-outlet and opening into the furnace and a pipe connecting the airchamber to a blower or other source of air under pressure; substantially as described.
6. Afurnace having a series of vertical gasflues in its wall, gas-burners having central gas-chambers connected to said flues and provided with surrounding air-chambers with slotted outlets surrounding the gas-outlets and an air-pipe connecting the air-chambers to a source of air under pressure; substantially as described.
7. A combustion-chamber having a gasburner opening into it, said burner having a gas-chamber with an opening or openings, a separate air-chamber having a slotted outlet opening into the combustion-chamber substantially parallel with the gas-outlet, and a pipe leading from a source of air under pressure to the air-chamber; substantially as described.
