IMPROVEMENT IN TURNING-LA'THES.
@lgs tlgttul referrer tu in there @hints-matt tut-mtingpttt tf tte tame.
TO ALL WHOM I'l MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, FREDRIK ZI'BELL, of the cityvand county of St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented a. new and useful Improvement in Machines for Shnfting; vund I do hereby declare the following to be a full undv exact description ofthe same, reference beingghud to the annexed drawings, and letters marked thereon.
Figure 1, in the drawing, represents e side view of my improvement.. i B is a. spindle passing through the pulley, by means of which the machine is driven. It is provided at the end with e socket a-nd thumb-screw to fasten the drive-screw A to. A'is a drive-screw passing through the nut I and extending into the frame D. This screw turns and passes the nut I along, froin one end to the other, byf
means offits thread. I is an ordinary lathe-nut, which is open, so it will pass back over the screw, as seen at I Vin ti'g`3. It is attached to the cutter-heed o o. o a is a1 carriage-head, which is provided with a. groove which lits on the tongue L L in the frame D. Fig. 1 shows only a half section ot' this carriage-head. H H, in iig.- 1, are cutters, which are round, and rest upona shoulder in the carriage-head o o, as seen in fig. 1. The front of this cutter may be seen in Figure 3, and marked H H, and also a, half section in Figure 5,. K is the shaft ot' iron tobe dressed, held in its pluce'by the tail-heads E E. Fig. 3 is a. front view of the carriage-heed und cutter II, which is the front cutter.` These cutters muy be of any number. S, Figure 4, is returning-head, to
be put in the place of the cutters H H when the shaft R is intended to revolve. M LNI are cutters iitting'close in a. socket in the turning-head, ns seen in the druwng, und fed by the feed-screw N, which is held in its plucer lby a. plete, P, attached to the turning-hendhy screws. R, Figure 2, is a. spindle-head, which may befustened in the same place that E is, in ease you wish to make the shaft revolve und use the turning-head, as seen :rt fig, 4. The cogged wheel works in aI corresponding wheelon the Vspindle B, which causes the spindle-head R to revolve, Iend thus turns the shaft K. v
Now, when I use the tail-heads E E, the shut't K that to be dressed remains fixed, andthe screw A moves the carriage-head o 4o, withy the cutters II H, along the shet, thus dressing :my size the cutters muy be. But when I wish, as in heavy work, to have the shaft K revolve, and use the head S, as seen in tig. 4, in place of kI'I II, I put the spindle-head R in platee of E, over the cogged wheel on the spindle B, fig. I, 'und the shaft will i revolve and be-dressed by the head und cutters, asexplained in tig. 4.
i described, und for the purposes'set forth..
Now, whut I clztini is not the cutters III-I alone, or the .'planers, but
1. I claim the combination of the nut I, screw A, and cut-ters ,H I-I, with the carriage-heed, as above" 2. I clnim the turning-head S, tig. 4, with the cutters M M and feed-screws, in combination with the carriage-head o o, ns above described, und forthe purposes set forth.
