Be it known that we, HENRY D. HIBBARD and W ALTER GASTON, citizens of the United States, residing at Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inVaults or Safes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to safes or vaults, the object of the invention being to provide an improved structure in which the fastening means shown and described in the several Letters Patent granted to Henry D. Hibbard for vaults, particularly Patents Nos. 662,433, dated y November 17, 1900; 679,371, dated July 30, 1901, and 713,880 and 713,881, dated November 18, 1902, may be used to greater advantage and without interfering with the capacity of the safe.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view of a pair of safe or vault lplates organized to form this improved structure. Fig. 2 is an interior elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, showing a somewhat dierent form of means for maintaining the plates in alinement. Fig. 4 is an interior elevation thereof. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view, partly in elevation, taken' in the line a a, Fig. 3.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the different figures of the drawings.
The fastening means referred to is particularly adapted for use with what is ordinarily known as unmachineable plates-that is, plates-such for instance, as manganese steel plates-which it is not practicable to drill or cut to form bolt-openings for the reception of bolts and by means of which fastenings the wall components or plates will have their contiguous edges or faces brought together under considerable tension, thereby obtaining high initial resistance,which must iirstbe overcome before such plates can be separated.
One of the objects of the present improvement is the provision of a structure inA which the fastening means are so located that the i capacity of the safe or vault is not interfered with.
Another object of the invention is the organization of the fastening means in such manner that a part thereof will, in addition to performing its usual function,assist in reinforcing the companion part of such fastening means, should this for any purpose be necessary.
Another objectk of the invention is the provision of a wall component or plate having an interiorly-located recess and an exteriorlylocated bead.
In the patented structures hereinbefore referred to the projections formed at the edges of the plate or wall components around which the links were located extended interiorly of A the safe to such an extent that they somewhat interfered with the capacity of the safe or vault, especially when a large number thereof were used, thus interfering with the interior arrangement of the shelving and compartments and preventing the utilization of all the space, necessitating that such shelving, which otherwise would be continuous from side to side of the structure, be arranged in sections. In order to obviate this disadvantage when the capacity of the safe or vault is amaterial consideration, the present improved structure is provided, in which the safeior vault plates are so constructed that while using the same fastening means such fastening means are located out of the way, so as not to interfere with the interior. area of 4the vault, and for this purpose we formin the structure shown each of the plates 2 at the inner side of the projections 3 withalongitudinally-extending recess, whereby provision is made for locating the links around the projections in the proper manner without materially interfering with the depthof such projections. It will be obvious, of course, that these recesses need not extend the entire length of the plates, but could be made to conform to the ends of the links at the sides of the projections. By this organization the inner ends 5 of the projections may be iiush with the major portions 6 of the plates, so that they will not extend be- Iyond the inner wall-surfaces of the safe or vault, and thus not interfere with the interior arrangementof the structure. 4If for any reason, however, it should be desirable that the projections extend beyond such inner wallsurfaces, by the provision of these recesses the projections need only project a comparatively short distance -beyond thewall-surfaces of the plates, so that by the cutting of slight recesses in the inner edges ofthe shelving the arrangement of such shelving need not be interfered with. In forming these recesses during the casting of the plates each plate .may be given a substantially ogee surface formation both at its interior and exterior. l'Each plate -will in practice be usually provided with an external bead or projection 7 at its outer surface adjacent to the joint, which in the form -of thev plate shown is a longitudinal bead and which constitutes, in the manner set forth-in said Patent No. 679,371, hereinbefore referred to, and in Patent No. 662,428.,
dated November 27, 1900, a meansto prevent the opening of the joint by the action of explosives. The alinement of the plates is maintained by a key 8, similar to that shown and described insaid patents, being located in an opening 9, formed by .contiguous re` cesses in the meeting walls of the projections.
This key, however, may be inserted into position after the links have been located upon the projections, and for this purpose the openj ing 9 will be located somewhat nearer the ends of the projections,` Figs. 3,4, and 5, and at` the outer side of such links.
In the forms shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5 the j key is shown wedge-shaped, the opening 9 being tapered atits outer side -to receive the key, so that the key can extend, if for any reason it should be desirable, beyond the prothe inner surfaces of the plate, although this need not necessarily be the case.
Having thus described our invention, We claim- I 1. A safe or vault plate having one or more projections along its edge and at the inner side of such projection or projections a recess.

5. A safe or vvault plate having one or more projections along its edge on the interior thereof, the inner end faceof each being substantially flush with the wall-surface of the plate.
6. A safe or wall plate having interiorlylocated projections adjacent to its edge and an ogee formation contiguous to such projections. j i

In a safe or vault, apair of plates set edge to edge, each having one or more interiorlylocated projections adjacent to its edge, the projection of one plate registering with that of its companion plate, and each ofsaid plates having a vrecess adjacent to its projection, whereby the inner faces of such projections are substantially iiush with the major part of ythe interior surfaces of the plates, and means forA securing said projections together.
8. In a safe or vault, a pair of plates set edge to edge each having one or more interiorlylocated projections adjacent to its edge, the projection of one plate registering with that of its companion plate, and each of said plates having a recess -adjacent to its projection,
whereby the inner faces of such projections are substantially iiush with the major part of the interior surfaces of thevplates, and means for securing said projections together, said means comprising a shrunk-on/link.
9. In a safe or vault, a pair of plates set edge to edge each having one or more interiorlylocated projections adjacent to its edge, the projection of one plate registering'withthat of its companion plate, and each of said plates having a recess adjacent to its projection, whereby the inner faces of such projections are substantially flush with the major part of l the interior surfaces of the plates, and means for securing said projections together, said means comprising a Vshrunk-on link,and means for maintaining the alinement of said plates relatively to each other.
10. In asafe or vault, a pair of plates set edge to edge each having one or more interiorly-located projections adjacent to its edge, the projection of one plate registering'with that of its companion plate, and. each of said plates having a recess adjacent to its projection, whereby the inner faces of such projections are substantially iiush with the major part of the interior surfaces of the plates, and means for securing said projections together, said means comprising a shrunk-on link, and means for maintaining the alinement of said plates relatively to each other, said means comprising a key located in contiguous recesses formed in such projections.

12. In a safe or vault, a pair of plates set edge to edge, each having an interiorly-located projection or projections adjacent to its edge, the projection of one plate registering with that of its companion plate and having its end face-substantially flush with the interior Wall or' such plate, means for maintaining such plates in engagement, and means for maintaining said plates in alinement.
13. In a safe or vault, a pair of plates set edge to edge, each of said plates having adjacent to its edge one or more inwardly-extending projections, the projections of one plate registering with those of the other, a link shrunk onto each set of registering projections, a tapered recess formed in each set of registering projections, and a Wedge-shaped key located in such recess and adapted to have its ends overlap the link.
14. In a safe or vault a pair of plates set edge to edge, each of said plates having a plurality of projections, the projections of one plate registering With those of the other, and each of said plates having a longitudinallyextending recess at the inner sides of its projections; links located in said recesses and shrunk onto said projections, each set of projections having a tapered recess extending therethrough and a tapered key projecting into each of such recesses.
15. In a safe or vault a pair of 4plates set edge to edge each ofsaid plates having adjacent to its edge one or more projections, the projections of one plate registering with those of another, means for clamping saidl plates together and means having a part projecting beyond such projections for maintaining the alinement of said plates.
16. In a safe or vault, a pair of plates set edge to edge, each of said plates having adjacent to its edge one or more projections, the projections of one plate registering with those of another, a link shrunk onto each set of registering projections, and means projecting beyond each set of projections for maintaining the alinement of the plates, said means having a part overlapping said link.
