UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN IVAN HAYCRAFT, OF LINNEUS, MISSOURI.
HOTEL-REGISTER DESK.
SEECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 757,920, dated April 19, 1904.
Application filed January 27, 190A. Serial No. 190,807. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, J oHN IVAN HAYORAFT,
a citizen of the United States, residing -at Linneus, in the county of Linn and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hotel-Register Desks, of which the following is a specification. My invention is an improvement in hotelregister desks for holding registers or similar books in hotels or other places; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a'perspective View of my desk. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on about line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of tbe desk, parts being broken away. Fig. i is a top plan view of the basesection partly broken away. Fig. is a detail section on about line 5 5 of Fig. l, and Fig. 6 is a detail section on about line 6 6 of Fig. l.
The device includes the desk proper or top A and the base B, supporting the desk by means presently described. The top A has its sides A' and A2 sloped from the upper edge of the top outwardly and downwardly, and said sloping edges are supplied with spaces for advertisements, and at the opposite front corners of the top A are provided boxes C for toothpicks and D for matches. The other corners of the top A are provided with boxes E and F, the former receiving an ink-well and the latter a bell f for use by the clerk. The rear edge a' of the desk A has the downwardly-sloping portions Gr G' adjacent to the boxes E and F, such portions G G being divided into spaces for advertisements, and between them I provide compartments H for cards, I for envelops, and J for pens. The spaces for advertisements on the sloping edges of the topand at .fr on the faces of the match and toothpick boxes may be supplied with metallic strips K or suitable moldings to form frames for the advertising-cards, as will be understood from Fig. l. rIhe frames or molding can be easily removed to insert or change the advertisements. The upper surface of the top may be finished in leather or otherwise to suit.
Manifestly any desired form of register may be employed for the table-top, which is supplied at its lower corner or corners with clasps L, pivoted at L' and actuated by a spring L2 and operating to hold the leaves of the register when adjusted as indicated in dotted lines. in Fig. 6.
In operation the register-desk is used upon a desk or counter, as illustrated in Fig. 1, and it is desirable to turn the register soit can be made to face the clerk or the guest, and to facilitate thisIrnountthe top A rotatably upon the base B and connect said parts by the means which I will now describe.
To the under side of the desk Ais fixed the ring M, which is provided with the depending circular flange M', provided on its inner edge at its lower end with the rack or teeth M2 and above the same with the annular groove M3.
The base B is below and concentric with-the ring M and forms a track on which the iiange M' of the latter rests. Pinions B are journaled in connection with the base B, have their teeth b' meshed with the rack M2, and are provided above the teeth b' with fianges b, which operatein the groove M3 of the ring Mhold ing the ring M in connection with the base B and turning freely to avoid friction as the desk or top is turned. Antifriction-balls L2 are provided below the pinions B', and the lattter are -journaled on screws B2, passing down through the pinions and the baseB and threaded at their lower ends. The feet B3, of rubber or the like, are screwed on the threaded ends of the screws B2 and form pads to rest on the polished or other surface of the desk, counter, or the like. The base B has within its ring-like portion a series of cross-bars B4, disposed, preferably, in the form of a star, the pad-feet B3 being arranged at the points of the star.
Adjacent to the upper edge of the side A' the top A is provided with a slot a, through which is drawn the blotter N, which consists,
as shown, of a blotting-paper or other bibulous sheet on the under side of one end of a fabric-carrier N', which is wound at its other end on a spring-roller N2, journaled to the under side of the top. By this construction the blotter can be readily drawn forward to IOC position for use and will when released be retracted by the spring-roller, as will be readily understood from Figs. 1 and 5; but the blotter N N N2 shown herein forms the subjectmatter of a separate application, Serial No. 190,808, filed January 27, 1904.
It will be noticed from Fig. 2 that the edges of the top A depend, surrounding the base B, and practically exclude lthe said base from view when the register-desk is in position for use, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings.
The device can be cheaply made or can be finished in any degree of elegance, and the spaces for the advertisements will not only cover the' initial cost of the desk, but will prove a source of income to the proprietor of the desk.
It will be, noticed that by providing for the advertisements, ink-well, cards, &c., in the register-desk I save the space ordinarily taken up by such devices on the counter or desk, and thus increase the counter-space without restricting the advertising-space ordinarily supplied byl pads or blotters on the desk.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The improvement in register-desks herein described comprising the top having the compartments for cards and envelops'and the corner-boxes for the ink-well, bell, toothpicks and matches and the downwardly-sloping surfaces for advertisements, the ring secured to the under side of the top and provided with the depending circular ange having on its inner face the cog-teeth and above the same the annular groove the base underlying said ring and forming a track for same, the pinions meshing with the cog-teeth of the flange and having top flanges operating in the annular groove, the screws forming journals for the pinion and projecting through and below the base and the pad-feet screwed on said screw substantially as set forth.
2. A register-desk comprising the base, the screwsin the base and projecting above and below the same the cushion-posts on the lower end of the screws and supporting the base, the pinions journaled on the upper end of the screws, the top having a ring resting on the base and provided with a circular rack meshed by the pinions and means holding the base and ring together substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of the desk-top the ring on the under side of same and having the depending circular fiange toothed on its inner side at its lower edge and provided in said side above its teeth with an annular groove, the base and the pinions journaled to the base and meshing with the teethof said ange and having flanges projecting into the annular groove thereof substantially as set forth.
4:. The combination of the desk-top, the ring on the under side thereof and having the rack or cog-ring and the annular groove above the same, the base, the screws passed through the base and projecting above and below the same, the pad-feet screwed on the lower ends of the screws and the pinions on the uppervends of the screws and meshing with the cog-ring and having flanges entering the groove above said cog-ring substantially as set forth.
JQHN IVAN HAYCRAFT.
