Description
4GARDNER CHILSON', OF BOSTON, MASSAOHUSETTSL Letters Patent No. 75,665, dated March 17, 1868. l
IMPROVEMENT IN COOKING-STOVES.
filge tlgttiile tetttteh tu in tlgtse tttttts tteut mit making putt at tlgtsrnn.
T() ALL" PERSONS TO WIIOM THESE PRESENTS MAY COME:
le it known that I, GARDNER CHILSON, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new anduseful Improvement in Cooking-Stoves; and do hereby declare the sameto'be t'ully described in the following`specitication, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of' which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal and vertical section ot' a stove provided with my invention.` Figure 2 is a transverse section, and
l Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken through the fireplace.
Figure 4 is a front elevation, and v v Figure 5 is a horizontal'section, taken through the boiling-chamber o r main upper flue ot' the stove.
In such drawings, A denotes the replace, B the grate, a a and b the soapstone jambe of the fireplace, CA vthe-oven, D the ash-chamber, E the boiling-chamber, and F the tlue leading therefrom and about the oven, the
whole being arranged in manner as represented.
In stoacs, and cooking-ranges, it has been customary to locate the hot-water back" or water-heater at the rear otfthcriireplace, or between it and the oven.
Incarrying out my invention, I arrange the hot-Water heater at the front of the fireplace and -its jamba, ivhether the latter be of soapstone or fire-brick. In the drawings, the said water-heater is represented at H `as arranged in front of the fireplace and its jambs, and between the same and an air-space or insulating-l chamber, G, provided with an opening at its front, and one or more doors, (l d, for closing such opening. vFrom this water-heater two pipes, c lead backward, directly over the end-jambe of the fireplace, and through and beyond the boiling-chamber E. These pipes are to convey water into and from thewater-heater, the water to i be heated going through one, pipe, and being discharged from the vessel by the other, and -into an'elevated cias tern, such as commonly employed with stoves and ranges provided with Water-backs. At each end of the iircplace, andag'ainst its end-jamb, is an insulating air-chamber, I. It serves to prevent the heat of the fireplace, conducted through the jamb, from being lost through the side-platefol` thc stove. K. is an air-register,
i'or supplying air to the grate and fireplace. L L arethe ash-chamber doors.
'lhe lmproved `arrangement of the water-heater is advantageous in several respects: First, yit enables the oven to bc heated to better advantage than it is likely to bc when awater-back is employed between it and the fireplace; second, it is a protection to a p'erson standing in front of the stove,A as it insulatessuch person from the fuel, and heilig at a temperature not greater than that of boiling water, it cannot set tire to the clothes of" a person. The air-chamber in front ofthe water-heater operates to prevent loss of heat therefrom'by radiation., 1
Within thc said .air-chamber, and applied to' the lowerpart of the watcr-heater, is a discharge-cock, M, which serves 'to enable a person to draw water from the heater, or to discharge any sediment deposited therein. By arranging the Water conduits withinthe boiling-chamber, and with respect to the fireplace, in mannergas speci. fied, the water, whileV passing through them, will be heated lby theheat and volatile products of combustion p contained in the saidchamber.
I do not claim the arrangement of a water-heater or water-back at the rear part of the fireplace, or between thc fireplace and oven; nor do I claim the extension of a water-heater entirely around a tire-pot of a furnace or stove; nor do Iicl-ai'm the mere extension of the pipe of a water-heater through what is usuallyvtermcdboiling-chamber of a stove, viz, the {lue-'space leading from the fircplacelaud over the oven.
I claim as my improvement- The arrangement of the water-heater, the oven, and the jambs ofthe fireplace, the said jambs, under sucharrangement, being between the oven and the heater, and the latter being at the jamb of the Jfireplace, as
set forth. v
I also 'claim the combination and arrangement of the insulating air-chamber and its door-opening, and the door or doors thereof', with the water-heater, arranged infront ot' the fireplace in manner as explained.
A GARDNER OHILSON.
