To ALL WHoM rr MAY ooNoERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM NELSON, of Cacher-ville, in the county of Yole, and State of California, have invented a' new and improved Gang-Plough; a-nd I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and
exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,.i`orming part of this specification.
This invention relates, rst, toeJ new and improved application of thoplough-beams, whereby the ploughs may, with the greatest facility, be raised entirely out of the ground when necessary,'as, for instance, in turning the machine at the endsof fui-rows, moving it from place to place, if-c., 85e., and the ploughs at the same time renderedA capable of being rmly secured vin position, so as to plough at any required depth, and also adjustedy ata greater or less distance apart, as circumstances may require. In the accompanying sheet of drawingsr VFigure-1 is aside sectional view ofmy invention, taken inthe line x rrr, fig. 2. Figure 2, a front view of the samer A Figure 3, a horizontal section of the same, taken in the line a" x', g. 2. Figure 4, a section 'of a portion of the same, taken in the line y y, iig. 2. Figure 5, a section of a portion of the same, taken in the line z z, iig. 2. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. A represents an axle, having a ywheel,-B, fitted loosely on cach end of it, aad C represents a frame, to
which the draught-pole D is secured. The rear end of the frame C is tted loosely on the axle A, so that the Vlatter may turn freely in the frame. To the rear part of the frame `C there is attached an upright frame, E,
on which the driver-s seat F is placed.
G is a segment or curved bar, the upper end of which is secured to the upper part of frame E, and the lower end secured to the rear or inner end of the draught-pole D. This bar G is notched at one edge or side to receive a lever, H, the lower end of which is pivoted to the inner part of the draught-pole within the frame vC, as shown by the dotted lines in lig. 1, at ct. This lever H is connected by a. chain, I, with theu'pper end of a lever or arm, J, the lower end of which is firmly connected to the axle A by va clamp, K, as shown clearly in fig'. 4, I
, L L represent two boxes which are composed each of an upper and lower plate, b b, connected together at a` suitable distance apart by side plates a c, through which the axle A passes, the upper and lower plates b b being secured by bolts d to the side plates c c. Through these boxes a horizontal shaft, M, passes, on which4 the front ends of plough-beams N N are fitted loosely,
The boxes L L may be adjusted laterally on the axle A, and secured at any desired point, so as to admit ot the beams N, and consequently the ploughs, being placed at a greater or less distance apart. as circumstances may require.
The lower plates b ofthe boxes extend back considerably beyond the latter, and have upright yokes or frames 0 secured to them, through which yokcs the ploughbeams N N pass. In the lower parts of these yokes orframcs there are placed wooden blocks e, one in ett/.111,071 which the plough-beams rest, and when no lateral adjustment of the ploughs is required-the beams may bc clamped down on these blocks by screwsf, which are fitted in the upper ends of the yokes. When the screws are not screwed down on the beams the latter are allowed a certain degree of play in the yokes, so that the plonghs may work towards or from each other, to clear or a'void obstructions.
4When necessary or desired, the ploughs may be raised entirely out of the ground by actuating the lever il, which, owing to its connection with the axle A, as shown, causes the axle toturn, and thereby elevate the rear ends of the beams N N, and consequently the ploughs and by securing the lever H in different upper Anotches in the segmenti-bar.G,-the ploughs may beadjustcdto penetrate` the earth` at a greater or less-depth,A
as may be required.
The lever H is held in the notches oi` the bar 'G by means of a curved rod, P, the lower end of which is pvoted on the front part of frame C, and has its upper end fitted between a pin, g, on the top of frame'E and the side of the drivers seat F. This rod P keeps the lever H engaged with the toothed segment or bar G.
The ploughs Q are attached to the rear ends of the beams N in the usual or in any proper manner.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The attaching ofthe plough-beams N N to the axle A by means ofthe boxes L L, constructed substantially as shown, in combination with the frame C, to which the draught-pole D is attached, said frame being connected to the axle A, as shown, and all arranged to operate in the manner substantially as and for the purpose set forth. v v
2. The notched segment-bar G, in combination with the lever H and arm J, connected by the chain I, and attached respectively to the draught-pole D and the axle A, and all arranged to operate in the manner substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The yokes or frames O, provided with the serewsf, and attached to the lower plates b ofthe boxes L L with the plough-beams N passinr through them, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
