Beit known that 1,-G1-:0RG NItiLSON, 'of Boston, in the county oi' Suiiollc, and Stute oi' Massachusetts,
`have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Lam ifllurners' and I hcrcb declare the followin to P r i ,Y g
Ybe a full, clear, and exact description ot'` the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to that class ot` burners for hydrocarbon iluids in which the base and wick-tube are coinoined with `an elevated deilcetor, vand air-supply cylinder, upon which such. deilector -is supported. In an 'application now pending in the United States Patent Oilice,1 have described and claimed a burner of this class.
My present inventionpthe object of which is `to; produce a simplified form 9f the same, consists essentially of, first, the combination, with the wick-tube, et a dctlector, andan nir-supply cylinder for supporting the same, when the saidcylindef'r constitutes at the same time the rest or seat for the 'lamp-chimney; second, the combination, with thcwick-tube and elevated deilector, et' a vcylinder forming at once the rest for thedetlector and the lampchimney and supported upon a perforated air-distributing pla-te or diaphragm mounted upon the wick-tube; third, the combination, with 4the wick-tube, and the air-distributing plate or diaphragm mounted thereon, et' the deiiector and combined air-supply cylinder and chimney-rest, when the latter is detachable and removable from the said diaphragm and wick-tube; fourth, the combination, with the air-supply cylinder, when constituting at the same time the chimney-scat ov rest, ot' springs for supporting the chimney in position; iifth, the construction ofthe air-distributing plate or diaphragrm-asphereinafter described.
To enable those skilled in the art ,to understand and use my invention, I will new proceed to describe the manner in which the same isor may bc'carriedinto cicct by reference tothe accompanyingr drawings, in which-a Figure l is a vertical centralsection of a burner constructcdin accordance with my invention.
Figure l is a like section of the base, wick-tube, and air-distributing diaphragm. I
Figure 3 is anelevation of the air-supply cylinder anddeiicctor removed from the burner.
c represents the baseof the burner, which carries the-wiek-'tube L and wiclcadjusting pinions c. Above the covered base of the burner a. perforated plate or air-distributor, cl, is mounted upon and rmly attached to the wick-tube, and upon this ,plate is supported a cylinder, f, the lower end ol' which is made `Haring, so as to iit over the plat-e EZ, and to form a bevelled seat for the chimney.. The cylinderf may be either soldered or riveted to the diaphragm cl, or it may be connected with the same bymerans ot' catches or lugs, t', which are attached to the base ofthe cylinder, and` engage with thediaphrag'm, as shown in` the drawings. The latter arrangement has this advantage, that the cylinder muy be readily detached and recieved from its seat whenever it is desiredto take the ou'rnenapart for cleansing 0r other purposes. By turning or revolving the cylinder on its seat until 'one of the lugs 'conics opposite au opening,7c, formed in the edge of the perforated plate d, the lug may be disengaged from the plate and the cylinderliited 'from the burner. Uponthc'uppcr end ot` the cylinder-,and
in proper position above the wick-tube, is supported the deilector, hinged as described in my pending application fur Letters Patent hcrenhefor'e referred to.4 Lhe basent` the lamp-himney is supported upon the bevclled seat mfiormed by the lower iiaring endof the air-supply'cylinder, and in order to support the chimney, springs n are attached to thc cylinder, as represented in iig'. l, which heur against the interior o i' the chimney in the usual manner. l
l'n order to catch the tluid which exudes from the upper end oi' the wick and runs down the sides ot` the wicktube, I form, in that portion.oi` the air-distributing plate fl immediately surrounding the wick-tube, a cup orcavity, c, into which the fluid is received, and thus prevented from spreading over the burner and lamp.
The' burner, when the eylinderfis madedetachuble, is composed of two sections or groups of elements, the, 'first consist-ing` of the air-supply and chimney-rest cylinder and the deilector, the second of the diaphragm or air-distributor upon which'tho cylinder is supported, thc wick-tube,vand the base. The former group, together with the chimney, can bc removed bodily from the burner, whenever the necessity arises, and the whole con struction, as well asthe combination of the component parts of the burner, is much simplified. The cup can be of course cleaned whenever desired, access being readily had to it after the cylinder and deflcctor are detached and removed.
Having now described my invention, und the manncrgin which the same is or may bc carried into eli'ect, what l elziim, and desire to sccur're by Let-ters Patent, ismA 1. The combination, with the wick-tube, of a dellector, and an air-supply cylinder for supporting the same, when the said cylinder constitutes at the same time the rester seat for the lampchimney, as herein described. 2. Th'e combination, with the Wick-tube and elevated detlector, of a cylinder, forming at once the rest for ,the deilector and the lamp-chimney, and supported upon a perforated. air-distributing pla-tc or diaphragm mounted upon the wick-tube, substantially as herein described.
3. The combination, with the Wicktube and air-distributing plate or diaphragm mounted thereon, of thc delector and combined air-supply cylinder and chimney-rest, when the latter is detachable and removable from the said, diaphragm and wick-tube, substantially as herein shown and described.
4. The combination, with the air-supply cylinder, when constituting at the same time the chimney-seater rest, of springs for supporting the chimney in position, substantially as herein specified` 5. The combination, with the wick-tube, of the airdistributer or diaphragm and the receptacle or cup formed in that part of the said diaphragm immediately surrounding the wick-tube, as and for the purposes herein shown and 'set forth.`
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification before two subscribing Witnesses.
GEORGE NEILSON.
