GERTRUDE STRICKER, OF BAKER, KANSAS.
GARMENT-HOOK- SPEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 755,411, dated March 22, 1904.
Application filed December 19, 1903. Serial No. 185,853. (No model.)
To. all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GERTRUDE STRIOKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baker, in the county of Brown and State of Kansas,
have invented new and useful Improvements in Garment-Hooks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in garment-fasteners; and its object is to provide a braid or tape having garment-fastening devices permanently secured thereto, said braid being adapted to be secured to a garment at any desired point, and thereby dispenses with the use of the ordinary hooks and eyes, which necessitate the separate attachment of each end thereof.
My invention consists of two strips of braid, one of which has a series of hooks permanently secured thereto at regular intervals, said hooks being of novel form and adapted to engage eyes which are permanently secured to the other braid.
The invention also consists in the further novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of two strips of braid constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the hooks detached. Fig. 4 is a similar view of one of the eyes, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged section on line 5 5, Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a strip of braid of any suitable material, and secured to this braid at regular intervals are hooks of novel construction. Each hook is formed in a single length of wire bent upon itself at the center, and the said central portion is curved toform a bill 2, which is arranged at one end of a U-shaped shank 3. Oppositely-extending arms at are arranged at one end of the shank 3 and terminate in parallel extensions 5, the ends of which are bent thereunder, as shown at 6, and terminate in lugs 7 which project inward therefrom. The bill 2, arms 4, and extensions 5 of the hooks are arranged upon one side of the braid 1, while the shank 3 and ends 6 of dental displacement.
the extensions are located upon the other side of the braid, and the lugs 7 project therefrom and prevent accidental displacement of the hooks. The braid is adapted .to be firmly clamped between the extensions 5 and their inwardly-extending end portions 6. The other strip of braid, 8, has eyes connected thereto at regular intervals, and each of these eyes is formed in a single length of wire. As shown in Fig. at, the eye has an intermediate or looped portion 9, from which extend parallel arms 10, having similar depressed portions 11 at points between the ends thereof. The free end of each arm 11 is bent inward to form a clamping extension 12, and the inner end of each of these extensions has a lug 13 thereon.
The eyes herein described are inserted into the braid in any suitable manner with the depressed portions 11 at one side ofthe braid and the balance of the arms at the other side thereof. The clamping extensions 12 aline with the depressed portions 11 and are arranged on the same side of the braid therewith, and the lugs 13 on.these extensions engage the braid and hold the eyes against acci- The loops 9 of the eyes preferably project beyond one edge of the braid, while the hooks 2, before referred to, are preferably slightly removed from one edge of the hook-braid.
The hooks and eyes herein described are adapted to be secured within the braid by machinery and after being once fastened therein are not to be removed. When it is desired to place the hooks and eyes in proper position upon a garment, the braid is fastened in place by sewing it with a sewing-machine or in any other desired manner, and it will be seen that a large number of hooks and eyes can be very quickly'fastened in position in this manner. Moreover, the braid serves to strengthen that portion of the garment to which the fastening devices are attached, and therefore the risk of injury to the fabric through undue strain thereonis practically obviated. The braid can be manufactured in any suitable lengths and widths.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; butI do not desire to limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall Within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, .what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a braid having eyes permanently connected thereto; of a second braid, a series of hooks permanently secured thereto, each hook being formed in a single length of wire and bent to form a shank, a bill, oppositely-bent arms and extensions, said bill, arms and extensions being arranged at one side of the braid, and inwardly-bent ends to the extensions integral with the arms and arranged with the shank, at the other side of the braid, said ends having braid-engaging lugs integral therewith.
2. The combination with a braid having eyes permanently secured thereto; of a second braid, hooks permanently secured thereto, each of said hooks being formed in a single piece of wire and comprising a shank, a bill at one end thereof, oppositely-bent arms at the other end of the shank, extensions to the arms and inwardly-extending ends to the extensions adapted to clamp the braid upon the extensions and braid-engaging lugs integral with said ends.
3. The combination with a braid having a looped wire projecting therefrom and forming an eye, said. eye comprising parallel depressed arms, clamping extensions and lugs upon the extensions; of a second braid, a hook permanently secured to the said braid and formed in a single piece of wire, said hook comprising a shank, a bill at one end thereof, oppositelyextending arms at the other end of the shank, extensions to the arms and inwardly-extending ends to the extensions adapted to clamp upon the braid, and braid-engaging lugs integral with said ends.
4:. The combination with an eye having parallel arms provided with similar depressed portions, clamping extensions integral with the arms and lugs upon the extensions; of a hook formed in a single piece of wire and comprising a shank, a bill at one end thereof, oppositely-extending arms integral with the shank, extensions thereto, inwardly-projecting.1 ends to the extensions and lugs upon said en s.
5. In a device of the character described, a hook formed in a single length of wire and comprising a shank, a bill at one end thereof, oppositely-bent arms integral with the other end of the shank, extensions projecting from the arms, inwardly-projecting ends to said extensions and lugs integral with the ends.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GERTRUDE STRICKER.
